Metro
♫ System Of A Down Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm alone, sitting with my broken glass
My four walls follow me through my past
I was on a Paris train
I emerged in London rain
And you waiting there swimming through apologies

I remember searching for the perfect words
I was hoping you might change your mind
I remember the soldier standing next to me
Riding on the metro

I went smiling as you took my hand
So removed we spoke in France
You were passed as shallow word
The years have passed and still a hurt
You were passed as shallow word
Years have passed and still a hurt
I can see it now smiling as I pulled away...
sorry

I remember the letter wrinkled in my hand
"I'll love you always" filled my eyes
I remember the night we walked along the Seine
Riding on the metro

I remember a feeling coming over me
The soldier turned, then walked away

i remember hating you for loving me
Riding on the metro

Overall Meaning

The song "Metro" by System Of A Down is a powerful ballad about a past relationship that still haunts the singer. The opening line "I'm alone, sitting with my broken glass" sets the mood of the song, with the singer feeling isolated and reflective. The next line, "My four walls follow me through my past", suggests that the singer is stuck in a cycle of regret and nostalgia, unable to move forward.

The second verse reveals that the singer was on a train from Paris to London when he met his former lover, who is described as "swimming through apologies". The imagery suggests that the relationship ended badly, and the other person is trying to make amends. The singer remembers hoping that they could reconcile, but ultimately, they were unable to work things out. The reference to the soldier on the metro gives the song a sense of time and place, with the implication that this relationship took place during a time of conflict.

The final verse hints at a letter that the singer received from their former lover, which contained the words "I'll love you always". This memory brings up conflicting emotions for the singer, who remembers hating the other person for loving them. The overall tone of the song is one of bittersweet regret, with the singer looking back on a relationship that was both joyful and painful.

This beat is so well produced and fits so perfect for Donny. It sounds way ahead of it’s time. Music finna sound like this 5 years from now, mark my words.

while I really like the beat and agree that it is well produced, I wouldn't say that music sounds like this in 5 years. It's not in any way extremely futuristic. In 5 years, I think the mainstream would sound more experimental and conceptual. Just look at big producers like Skrillex, Flume, Quiet Bison, Arca etc. I feel like that's more the way music will evolve

@RobRoeder53
