Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Moon Light" by Ayumi Ishida and Tin Pan Alley Family capture the feeling of being lost and alone in a big city. The singer is left alone in a room with the white shirt of someone they care about, and they feel a sense of freedom in being able to be alone. As they wander around the city, they feel disconnected from the bright lights of the many tall buildings and the chaotic sounds of people playing "tag." The singer is not sure where their companion is, but they long to know everything about them without expressing it directly. The feeling of loneliness is palpable and leads to the singer leaning their cheek against a cold surface for comfort.

The second verse speaks about the feeling of being lost in the city. The singer describes feeling themselves becoming permeated by the cool water that they walk through, to the point where they feel that they are merging with the asphalt. They note the flowers they see around them, believing that they are changing colors in slow motion. The bright lights of the city and the activity around them leave the singer feeling as if they are disappearing into the background. Despite this, they can't bring themselves to leave the Moon Light and keep wandering the streets out of loneliness and longing.
