伊東ゆかり Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

.And I′m a fool
Each star's a pool of water, cool clear water
But with the dawn I′ll wake and yawn
And carry on to water
Cool, clear water

The shadows sway and seem to say
"Tonight we pray for water
Cool, clear water."
And way up there He'll hear our prayer
And show us where there's water
Cool, clear water

Keep a-movin′, Dan, don′t you listen to him, Dan
He's a devil not a man
And he spreads the burning sand with water
Dan, can you see that big green tree
Where the water′s running free
And it's waiting there for you and me
Cool, clear water

Dan′s feet are sore, he's yearning for
Just one thing more than water
Cool, clear water
Like me, I guess, he′d like to rest

Where there's no quest for water
Cool, clear water

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Cool Water" describe a group of travelers in the desert, desperate for water. The first verse sets the tone with the line "And I'm a fool," hinting that the singer may have made a mistake by embarking on this journey. They look up at the stars, which appear as pools of water to them, but know that they must continue moving towards real water, regardless of how difficult that may be. The shadows around them seem to echo their prayer for water, and the song suggests that God will hear their prayer and guide them to water.

The second verse introduces a character named Dan, who is also traveling in the desert with the others. The lyrics caution Dan not to listen to the devil that tells him there is no water, but to keep moving towards the green tree where there is, in fact, water. Dan, like the singer, is exhausted and yearning for water, but like the others, he knows that he must keep moving forward to find it. The song ends with the hope that they will eventually find a place to rest where they will no longer have to struggle for water.
