My Favorite Things
南里侑香 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woollen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things.

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don′t feel so bad!

Overall Meaning

"My Favorite Things" is a song from the musical "The Sound of Music" by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. It is a joyful song that describes a list of simple, yet cherished items that bring comfort and happiness to the singer. The song opens with the singer describing various objects and experiences, such as "raindrops on roses," "whiskers on kittens," "bright copper kettles," "warm woolen mittens," and "brown paper packages tied up with strings." These items evoke a sense of nostalgia and comfort, conveying the idea that happiness can be found in the simplest things in life.

The second verse continues with more items, including "cream-colored ponies," "crisp apple strudels," "doorbells and sleigh bells," "schnitzel with noodles," and "wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings." The final verse includes poetic images, such as "girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes," "snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes," and "silver white winters that melt into springs." The song suggests that focusing on these simple pleasures can lift one's spirits and alleviate feelings of sadness or anxiety.

In the end, the song's message is that it's important to remember the things that bring us joy, particularly during difficult times. By focusing on these simple pleasures, we can find comfort and happiness in the midst of life's challenges.

I looked up "Vibrato" for you, and low and behold,
"Vibrato is a musical effect consisting of a regular, pulsating change of pitch. It is used to add expression to vocal and instrumental music."

Such can be heard in the strings that make give a more full emotion and breadth to the song,

But also in the original singer's voice from The Sound of Music.
I don't like her singing especially either tbh, sounds too much robust and shouting, or quiet and spoken--neither of which holds on and savors the vibrato enough for this jazzed up version of the instrumentals

But it's not just vibrato this Engrish singer is missing: she has no sway either.Literally meaning "to swing from side to side or to influence", it's that deeper feeling in slow jazz or blues that takes you somewhere emotional, sympathetic, etc. You get the idea. The music has this, but her singing? You've got to be kidding me: worse than walking on eggshells, it's like hammering nails in to floorboards, and just hitting them in harder when her voice raises XD

Thing is, it's really not supposed to sound good or meet your typical vocal expectations since she's not actually a singer nor a native English speaker. The whole scene's about this nice innocent girl helping out her friends rehearsing. It sounds genuinely cute and pure to someone who watched it without expecting an unnaturally trained voice. There's nothing wrong with it, in fact it's so natural and cozy we can't help loving it! Definitely one of my all time anime favorites, a truly masterpiece at capturing reality by mixing music and feelings with tough life situations.

@rami7587

To me it's better than the original
