Before debut, Eric Nam actively did song covers, uploading them on YouTube. In high school, he once auditioned for SM Entertainment, but was rejected. Another time, a JYP Entertainment representative discovered him through YouTube and suggested that he should go to a JYP audition in New York, but he rejected so as to focus on his studies. He was next discovered by Korean broadcasting company MBC, who flew him out to Korea for an audition in person. Eric Nam then became a part of the talent search show, 'Birth of a Great Star 2' as a contestant in December, 2011. He stayed in the competition for about 8 months and made it to the Top 5.
On September 25, he officially joined B2M Entertainment company and became a solo artist. Eric's first album 'Cloud 9' was dropped on January 23, 2013, together with the music video of 천국의 문 (Heaven's Door).
Eric Nam has also worked as a reporter for MBC's 'Section TV', where he conducted interviews for many Hollywood stars such as Amanda Seyfried, Miranda Kerr and Barbara Palvin, and even got praise from Jamie Foxx as a "truly talented young man". Eric is currently a host for Arirang's After School Club.
On April 8, he dropped his 1st digital single, "Ooh Ooh", featuring INFINITE member Hoya.
