One More Try
George Michael Lyrics

And people on the streets
I'm looking out for angels
Just trying to find some peace
Now I think it's time
That you let me know
So if you love me
Say you love me
'Cause teacher
There are things that I don't want to learn
And the last one I had
Made me cry
So I don't want to learn to
Hold you, touch you
Think that you're mine
Because it ain't no joy
For an uptown boy
Whose teacher has told him goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
When you were just a stranger
And I was at your feet
I didn't feel the danger
Now I feel the heat
That look in your eyes
Telling me no
So you think that you love me
Know that you need me
I wrote the song, I know it's wrong
Just let me go
And teacher
There are things
That I don't want to learn
Oh the last one I had
Made me cry
So I don't want to learn to
Hold you, touch you
Think that you're mine
Because it ain't no joy
For an uptown boy
Whose teacher has told him goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
So when you say that you need me
That you'll never leave me
I know you're wrong, you're not that strong
Let me go
And teacher
There are things
That I still have to learn
But the one thing I have is my pride
Oh so I don't want to learn
Hold you, touch you
Think that you're mine
Because there ain't no joy
For an uptown boy
Who just isn't willing to try
I'm so cold
Inside
Maybe just one more try
The lyrics of "One More Try" by George Michael delve into the theme of longing for love and security in a relationship, but also the fear of vulnerability and potential hurt that can come with it. The singer expresses a deep desire for peace and angels, indicating a search for comfort and protection from the chaos of the world around them. They are seeking reassurance and honesty in their relationship, asking for love to be reciprocated but also acknowledging the pain of rejection.
The mention of a "teacher" symbolizes a figure of authority or guidance in the singer's life, someone who has imparted painful lessons and caused emotional distress in the past. There is reluctance to fully embrace love and intimacy, fearing the potential for heartbreak and loss. The lyrics convey a sense of resignation to the idea that love may not bring joy, especially for someone coming from a privileged or "uptown" background where expectations may be high.
As the relationship evolves and the dynamics shift, the singer grapples with conflicting emotions of longing and self-preservation. The hesitation to fully commit and the acknowledgment of pride hint at a struggle with vulnerability and a desire to protect oneself from potential pain. The repetition of "goodbye" underscores the theme of endings and closure, indicating a reluctance to invest fully in a relationship that may not last.
In the final plea for "one more try," the singer confronts their own emotional barriers and the internal conflict between the desire for love and the fear of hurt. The plea for another chance represents a willingness to take a risk and open up to the possibility of love, despite past experiences. Overall, the lyrics of "One More Try" offer a poignant portrayal of the complexities of relationships, vulnerability, and the ongoing search for connection and fulfillment.

I'm seeking peace and guidance
Just trying to find some peace
Simply seeking tranquility in my life
Now I think it's time
I believe it's time for honesty and clarity
That you let me know
That you express your true feelings to me
So if you love me
If you truly care for me
Say you love me
Be honest and declare your love for me
But if you don't just let me go
If you don't, then it's best to end things
'Cause teacher
Because there are things I don't want to learn
There are things that I don't want to learn
There are certain aspects of life I wish to avoid
And the last one I had
The previous experience I had
Made me cry
Caused me emotional pain
So I don't want to learn to
I don't wish to understand how to
Hold you, touch you
Be emotionally attached to you
Think that you're mine
Believe that you belong to me
Because it ain't no joy
Because there is no happiness
For an uptown boy
For someone from a privileged background
Whose teacher has told him goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
Whose mentor has ended their relationship
When you were just a stranger
Back when you were unknown to me
And I was at your feet
When I was vulnerable in front of you
I didn't feel the danger
I didn't realize the potential risks involved
Now I feel the heat
Now I sense the intensity of the situation
That look in your eyes
Your expression that suggests rejection
Telling me no
Signaling a negative response
So you think that you love me
You believe you have feelings for me
Know that you need me
Recognize that you require my presence
I wrote the song, I know it's wrong
I composed this song knowing it's misguided
Just let me go
Just allow me to move on
So when you say that you need me
When you claim to require me
That you'll never leave me
That you'll always stay by my side
I know you're wrong, you're not that strong
I understand that you're mistaken, you lack the strength
And the one thing I have is my pride
The only thing I possess is my sense of self-respect
Oh so I don't want to learn
Therefore, I refuse to understand
Who just isn't willing to try
Who simply isn't prepared to make the effort
I'm so cold
I feel emotionally detached
Inside
Within myself
Maybe just one more try
Perhaps giving it one last attempt

I too used to listen to certain music during my "black hole" years. Ultimately psychotherapy and later medication pulled me back to the life I had left. Now, age 77, all's well. So don't ever give up; there is help - you just have to ask for it.
