Good Times Bad Times
Godsmack Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the days of my youth
I was told what it was to be a man
And now I've reached that age
I've tried to do all those things the best I can
No matter how I try
I find my way to do the same old jam

Good times, bad times
You know I had my share
When my woman left home
With a brown eyed man
Well, I still don't seem to care

Sixteen, I fell in love
With a girl as sweet as could be
She only took a couple of days
'Till she was rid of me
She swore that she would be all mine
And love me till the end
When I whispered in her ear
I lost another friend

Good times, bad times
You know I had my share
When my woman left home
For a brown eyed man
Well, I still don't seem to care

Good times, bad times
You know I had my share
When my woman left home
For a brown eyed man
Well, I still don't seem to care

I know what it means to be alone
I sure do wish that I was at home
And I don't care what my neighbors say
I'm gonna love you each and every day
You can feel the heat within my heart

Realize sweet babe
We ain't ever gonna part, oh yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Godsmack's song "Good Times Bad Times" speak to the struggles of growing up and experiencing both the highs and lows of life. The first stanza reflects on the lessons learned during youth about what it means to be a man, and how despite trying to live up to these expectations, we often find ourselves repeating mistakes and falling back into old habits. The refrain of "Good times, bad times, you know I had my share" acknowledges that life is full of both joy and pain, and that we must learn to accept and appreciate both.

The second stanza tells the story of a failed relationship, with the singer falling in love with a girl who ultimately leaves him for another man. Despite the heartbreak, the singer seems resigned to his fate, stating that he "still [doesn't] seem to care." The chorus is repeated, emphasizing the idea that no matter what happens in life - whether it be good or bad - we must learn to accept and move forward.

Not many bands have EVER been able to pull off a good sounding Led Zeppelin cover. Godsmack is the exception to this. NICE job, guys!

Godsmack was a Zeppelin cover band before they got famous if I’m not mistaken. I think I read that somewhere a long time ago

It's not about who does it best, it's about keeping these great classic tracks alive. I love Zeppelin and i love Godsmack and both versions are worthy of their place in Rock's history

I must admit...This band does the song justice. This lead singer articulates all his words so clear cut that I actually heard the lyrics for the first time. This is the sign of an artist with a high level of confidence.... My sister bought Sullys home in NH. It was like an Arabian theme in the main room.... My brother in law lives there still.

I've heard arguments about Shannon's ability to play the drum parts with a single/double pedal, or whether the parts were dubbed...I played with Shannon in Wrathchild, and I can tell you he can do this in his sleep...he is a drum monster
