The Rolling Stones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can't get no satisfaction, I can't get no satisfaction
'Cause I try and I try and I try and I try
I can't get no, I can't get no

When I'm drivin' in my car, and the man come on the radio
He's tellin' me more and more about some useless information
Supposed to fire my imagination
I can't get no, oh, no, no, no, hey, hey, hey
That's what I say
I can't get no satisfaction, I can't get no satisfaction
'Cause I try and I try and I try and I try
I can't get no, I can't get no

When I'm watchin' my tv and a man comes on and tell me
How white my shirts can be
But, he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke
The same cigarettes as me

I can't get no, oh, no, no, no, hey, hey, hey
That's what I say
I can't get no satisfaction, I can't get girl reaction
'Cause I try and I try and I try and I try
I can't get no, I can't get no

When I'm ridin' round the world
And I'm doin' this and I'm signin' that
And I'm tryin' to make some girl, who tells me
Baby, better come back maybe next week
Can't you see I'm on a losing streak
I can't get no, oh, no, no, no, hey, hey, hey
That's what I say, I can't get no, I can't get no

I can't get no satisfaction, no satisfaction
No satisfaction, no satisfaction

Overall Meaning

The Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" is a timeless classic that reflects the dissatisfaction of the younger generation with the status quo. The lyrics describe the singer's inability to find satisfaction in various areas of life: relationships, material possessions, and entertainment. The opening line, "I can't get no satisfaction," is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the frustration and disillusionment that the singer feels. The lyrics go on to describe how the media bombards us with "useless information" and tries to condition us into believing that certain material possessions will bring us happiness. However, the singer rejects this notion and remains unsatisfied.

The second verse reflects the sexism that was prevalent during the time the song was written. The singer describes how a man on TV tells him how to make his white shirts whiter, but he cannot be a real man because he doesn't smoke the same brand of cigarettes. The message here is that society tries to dictate how we should behave and what we should consume, but ultimately, we must define our own sense of identity and values.

In the final verse, the singer describes his experiences on the road, trying to make it as a musician. He meets a girl who brushes him off and tells him to come back next week. He realizes he's on a "losing streak" and is unable to find the success and satisfaction he desires. The song concludes with the repetition of the opening line, highlighting the cyclical nature of the singer's struggle.
