After heavily publicized legal battles with their former manager Lou Pearlman and former record label Bertelsmann Music Group, the group's second album, No Strings Attached (2000), sold over one million copies in one day and 2.42 million copies in one week, which was a record for over fifteen years. NSYNC's first two studio albums were both certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Celebrity (2001) debuted with 1.8 million copies in its first week in the US. Singles such as "Bye Bye Bye", "This I Promise You", "Girlfriend", "Pop" and "It's Gonna Be Me" reached the top 10 in several international charts, with the last being a US Billboard Hot 100 number one. In addition to a host of Grammy Award nominations, NSYNC has performed at the World Series, the Super Bowl and the Olympic Games, and sang or recorded with Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Phil Collins, Celine Dion, Aerosmith, Nelly, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, Mary J. Blige, Alabama, and Gloria Estefan. The group has received eight Grammy Award nominations.
NSYNC last recorded new material in 2002. The five members have reunited a couple of times, including at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards and to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The band completed five nationwide concert tours and has sold over 70 million records, becoming one of the best-selling boy bands in history. Rolling Stone recognized their instant success as one of the Top 25 Teen Idol Breakout Moments of all time. NSYNC is set to release their first new song in over 20 years, "Better Place", for the upcoming animated movie, Trolls Band Together, which Timberlake stars in.
The First Noel
*NSYNC Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Born is the King of Israel
The first Noel, the angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds
In fields as they lay
In fields where they
Lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter's night
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel
They looked up
And saw a star
Shining in the the East
Beyond them far
And to the earth it
It gave great light
And so it continued
Both day and night
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.
And by the light of that same star,
Three wise men came
From country far,
To seek for a King
Was their intent,
And to follow the star wherever it went.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.
Born is the King of Israel.
The song begins with the repeated refrain of “Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel” which means “Christmas” in French. It announces the birth of Jesus Christ who is referred to as the “King of Israel”. The first verse describes the biblical story from the Gospel of Luke where an angel appears before some shepherds and tells them about the birth of the Savior. The lyrics depict the setting as a “cold winter’s night” when the shepherds were keeping watch over their flocks in the fields. This imagery is symbolic of how the world was in darkness until the birth of Jesus brought light into it. The shepherds are representative of the humble and lowly who were the first to hear the good news of Jesus’ arrival.
In the second verse, the lyrics talk about a star that appears in the sky, which guided the wise men to the place where Jesus was born. The song paints the picture of a bright light that shone from the star and illuminated the darkness. This star was a symbol of God’s intervention and guidance towards Jesus. The final verse talks about the wise men who came from a distant land to pay homage to Jesus. They were keen to find Him and followed the star wherever it went. This verse signifies that Jesus is not only the Savior of the Jews but of all nations, and that the wise men came from a far-off land to pay their respects to Him.
