Simple Life
- Lynyrd Skynyrd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey, when is the last time you sat down and had dinner with your kids?
Talked about what's going on in their lives?
Hey, when is the last time you just stopped and helped somebody out?
I bet you can't remember

Well a lot of people are sayin'
"we're changing for the better"
Well that don't interest me

I like the simple life
The way it used to be
We left our doors wide open
We didn't need no key
I've been around the world
Seen all there is to see
I'd trade all those memories for one more day
How it used to be
I like the simple life

I wanna get up Sunday mornin'
Go fishin' with my boy
Watch the sunset kick back in my yard
Take my harley on a real long lazy Sunday drive
And do a little more nothin' once in a while

Yeah maybe kick my feet up
Watch a little re-run on tv
Laughin' with ol' barney, andy and aunt bee

I like the simple life
The way it used to be
We left our doors wide open
We didn't need no key
I've been around the world
Seen all there is to see
I'd trade all those memories for one more day
How it used to be
I like the simple life

Everything's going by so fast
I swear sometimes we just can't see
So caught up in where we're trying to get
Life as we know it, could be gone in a minute

I like the simple life
The way it used to be
We left our doors wide open
We didn't need no key
I've been around the world
Seen all there is to see
I'd trade all those memories for one more day
I like the simple life

I like the simple life
I want the simple life

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Lynyrd Skynyrd's song "Simple Life" reflect a longing for a simpler and more meaningful existence in contrast to the fast-paced and complicated modern world. The song begins by questioning the last time someone took the time to have a genuine conversation with their children or helped someone in need. It suggests that many people claim to be changing for the better, but this doesn't interest the singer.

The chorus expresses a desire for the simplicity of the past, where doors were left open and trust prevailed. The singer has traveled the world and experienced everything it has to offer, but would trade all those memories for one more day of how life used to be. The simplicity is further described in the desire to go fishing with a child, watching sunsets in the backyard, riding a motorcycle on a lazy Sunday, and enjoying reruns of classic television shows.

The song highlights the speed at which life passes by and the danger of being too caught up in the pursuit of goals and material success. The final repetition of the chorus reaffirms the singer's preference for the simple life and emphasizes the longing for its return.

Overall, "Simple Life" encourages listeners to reflect on the value of slowing down, cherishing relationships, and finding contentment in the small pleasures of life.

I love Lynyrd Skynyrd. I actually cry thinking about the plane crash. Why do good people have to dye?! Lynyrd Skynyrd to me symbolize love, love towards family, friends and anyone that comes in our life. They symbolize how a simple life will help in the long run. I love their simplicity and I try to adapt it in my life:)

"Why do good people have to dye?!" __ And why do they have to die so young, while they are in their prime? I believe it is because there is no other way we could be blessed with their music. IOW, God granted them a short stay, instead of none at all, and we are all forever grateful. Re. "simple life" - Albert Einstein agrees, "a quiet and modest life brings more joy than a pursuit of success bound with constant unrest.”

ive liked skynyrd for ages but saw them live for the first time ago about 2 weeks ago now. even though there were alot of people at that gig i felt apart of their family for the short time they were on stage, i cried all the way through free bird as i was overcome with emotion and since that point in my life ive started to take notice of the little things in life, lynyrd skynyrd are making me a better person. respect to you and all your family.

Saudade = "i cried all the way through free bird as i was overcome with emotion."

ZEN (adj.) = "since that point in my life ive started to take notice of the little things in life"
