I love this video because I relate to the guy and his wife who are just plain, simple people living out a simple life. We seem to hold a different set of values from most people around us. Our idea of a good time is a bit more subdued and quiet. We don't feel the need to be seen, we don't take pictures of every meal we eat to post on Instagram. We simply quietly and conscientiously live out our lives, taking care to raise our children as best we can and maintain our carefully planned retirement. We aren't beautiful, but we're grateful to be alive and live in relative peace and comfort. Our lives are not hectic, we are not manic, jumping from whirlwind affair to dramatic breakup. We are slowly and steadily winning the race.

I kinda like the fact that even though they are out of place the entire video and none of this is their life or appeals to them, you never see any of the “beautiful people” mock them or judge them for not fitting in or doing their own thing. They all kinda do their own things and coexist too. This makes it less of a criticism of “beautiful people” and more of an acknowledgment that we all have different joys and values and wants in our lives and we should remain true to those things.

@Lohnerable there are a couple scenes where you kinda see people notice them but they tend to return to what they were already doing. I never see an active irritation at the couple, I think it would’ve been more “tropey” to have people questioning their presence or actively blocking them from attending but throughout the entire video we see them living the life right alongside the beautiful people as active participants so that’s why I ended up with that interpretation. It could be wrong but honestly if it’s just another “rich people are shallow and phony” song made by people who are technically living the life being criticized it’s a bit less impactful to me. Still a good song.

I felt like an absolute outsider while solo traveling in Greece in the summer of 2022 without my girlfriend - I had signed up for one of those “party” tour things didn’t really knowing what I was getting into, and I had never felt more alone in my life surrounded by people who were exactly like those surrounding the couple in this video. I couldn't, for the life of me, fit in with the tour group I was part of (who somehow all ended up being Australians, but they all signed up separately which was an amazing coincidence) and being the only Asian I stuck out like a sore thumb. This song kept playing in my head, the idea of being surrounded by “beautiful people” and feeling so alone and never being able to fit in. Just revisited this music video again after more than a year and I'm weeping now, perhaps from a mixture of those memories and just the fact that the message of this song is so simple yet beautiful.
