Wow that was intense! Well done guys and well done Millie. I was urging her on the whole 20 miles. She deserves a good scrub down and maybe a pampering tune up after that.
So sad you missed out on exploring the Isle of Skye. I lived in Edinburgh for two years, and that island is one of my favourite places on Earth (as well as Glencoe). Oban holds some fun memories too. Got stuck there (by choice) on a "3 day" tour of the highlands that turned into five days. Conversation with the boss went something like,
"Sorry, I'm not coming into work today."
"Aw, are you sick?"
"No, I'm in Oban."
"Oh! Will you be in tomorrow?"
"Ah, yeah, nah hopefully, hey."
"Alright, I guess I'll see you then."
I had the best boss in the British Philatelic Bureau. ^^

Reminded me of the sailing I did when I was growing up with my parents and family friends on the west coast of Scotland on their yacht (Voltaire, a Nicholson 38).

Cold, Wet and windy but so very spectacular! At 15 I loved it! Perhaps ignorance/stupidity! Thanks for such a good video of it all! Even Erik should be impressed! Glad you had a nice whisky got warmed up and had a good sleep :-)!

Kyle Rhea is a very strong tidal race! Not to be messed with but absolutely right you won't get through if you're against it!

Whatever the weather's like outside the Sound of Mull is usually pretty sheltered, Tobermoray is a large harbour and very sheltered (nice restaurants and fish and chips too) with moorings if you fancy somewhere slightly more civilised to stop off near to Oban.

Hope that you get to explore the Hebrides next summer!

Welcome to this part of Scotland. You have already had a taste of the winter winds here but Kerrera is fairly sheltered. I live on my old Moody 47 in the marina at Corpach, at the entrance to the Caledonian Canal, and 3 miles outside Fort William, the outdoor capital of the UK. I stay in marinas for the 6 months of winter. Having spent the last 4 years in this area refitting my boat I can tell you to expect 60knt gusts regularly throughout the winter, with occasional 80 knt days, sometimes more. As you have discovered (I used to liveaboard my last boat in southern CA) condensation is a real issue on a boat here. I am in the process of tackling that issue myself. One thing I did was install a small woodstove for burning driftwood, but the window frames need wiping down several times a day. I have a plan to solve that issue. A dehumidifier is almost mandatory here in winter. Anyway, welcome! If you are in Fort William at any time, give me some warning and I will happily cook you both a curry and you will get a great view of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, from the cockpit of the boat. The best...and well done sailing to Iceland and then here!

Was stationed in Holy Loch Scotland on a Sub tender that was moored in the center of the Loch. We were a couple 100 yds from the beginning of the loch. The wind would funnel down the mountain at 70+ knots. It created 5 foot swells in that short distance. It strained at the moorings and rocked the Subs along side. It is quite impressive to witness those winter gale forces. I feel for you both. Glad you are Safe.

As a US Marine major, I had occasion to visit a sub tender in Holy Loch a couple of times between 1984 and 1986. Unfortunately and with no disrespect to my Navy brethren, I do not remember the name of the ship. From what I understood at the time, the weather was typical for the time periods I was there. Cold and raining sideways. Interesting place. I also had the same business on trips the USS Orion in La Maddalena. So, what the heck was a US Marine Corps major doing on sub tenders in Europe?

I'm really glad you two are safe. :-) I hope you checked your fuel filter system after your difficult passage. This is always important (before such a passage). Fuel sediment gets kicked up. Imagine how much trouble you would have been in if your engine had quit. 💗

Great video. It brings back some fond memories from this past summer. Starting out in Ardrossan and heading north into the Scottish Highlands. The weather then was awful then too in July. Great job handling the weather, but I would have expected that from sailors such as yourself. Enjoy the Scottish whiskey we miss that, especially since it seems every town we sailed to had it's own whiskey. it made for a wonderful tour of Scotland. Good luck with the winter months in Oban. My understanding is the wind can be brutal in the winter in Scotland.

Great wild ride, a memory that will last forever! I have sailed that part of Scotland over about 5 years and though the weather is changeable in the Oct to March seasons, the area is fantastic as a sailing area in April - September! If you can sail there next season, I think you will find as sailors that you come to love the sailing between fantastic anchorages, sealife,seafood and scenery, better than anywhere else you have sailed. Refit in winter (i did this last winter near Oban) is tough though! Hope the heater works well, or rent a cabin!! Fantastic film as ever!

Guys, what an episode !! I live in Newcastle upon Tyne and know the West coast of Scotland well, hence my surprise when I saw you sailing from Iceland to the UK in the last episode..Then to realise you were actually going to sail south at the time of year, WOW. Anyway it made for great viewing, and I'm very happy all turned out well, that part of the coastline can be unpredictable and unforgiving as you have discovered. I haven't experienced quite that level of wind, but I've been solo sailing in 40+ kts gusts and reasonably large breaking seas. It was where I found my breaking point with seasickness. The point is, I could feel your discomfort and concern. I think you put a good face on it even in the midst of what I'm guessing was worse in the pits of your stomachs. Either way, I'm glad you are safe, and thank you for sharing the experience.

The deck hatches put plastic over the drop down screens and close them it will stop hatches from sweating. Port holes if you still have the screen inserts stretch Seran wrap over them it will stop most of the sweating there. Once you get the heat running a small fan on the the cabin sole blowing up will help to even out the temperature in the boat. Close the dorad vents ;-)

For city dwellers, or people living in a region with many trees, that never sail out there, it's good to be aware that the Beaufort sale wind speed number in the weather report is not what they experience. My rule of thumb is that we need to deduce about 3 from the weather report's Beaufort number in such areas.
With a peak wind speed of 48 knots, this journey happened in the Beaufort 8..10 zone. The table below gives metric numbers and some other clues.

I spent a couple of summers up there on an Army landing craft (LCL) doing resupply runs to Benbecula and St. Kilda. It is truly one of the most beautiful parts of the world. We nearly didn't make it up there one year when caught in a gale off Rathlin Island, and ended up head to wind going backwards over the ground. This was a 1600 ton ship, but with only 6' draft aft! Beaching on St. Kilda was amazing though!
