Help!
29. The Beatles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Help) I need somebody
(Help) not just anybody
(Help) you know I need someone
(Help)

(When) when I was younger (when I was young) so much younger than today
(I never needed) I never needed anybody's help in any way
(Now) but now these days are gone (these days are gone) I'm not so self-assured (and now I find)
Now I find I've changed my mind, I've opened up the doors

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me?

(Now) and now my life has changed (my life has changed) in oh-so-many ways (my independence)
My independence seems to vanish in the haze
(But) but every now and then (now and then) I feel so insecure (I know that I)
I know that I just need you like I never done before

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me?

When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
(Now) but now these days are gone (these days are gone) I'm not so self-assured (and now I find)
Now I find, I've changed my mind, I've opened up the doors

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round

Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me, help me, help me, ooh?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Help!" by the Beatles reveal vulnerability and a need for support. In the beginning, the singer is asking for help, emphasizing his need for assistance. However, as the song progresses, he reflects on a time when he did not require anyone's help but has since changed his mind. He acknowledges feeling insecure at times and recognizes that he needs someone to lean on every now and then. The singer ultimately pleads for assistance in getting his feet back on the ground and seeks the help of the listener.

The lyrics showcase the evolution of life and how we must adapt to change. The music video for the song also portrays this theme, with the Beatles dressed in black and white finely tailored suits, unleased to roam around fields of long grass. This was a major shift from their earlier clean cut looks. The song was used as the title track and theme song for the Beatles' second film, which further amplified the idea of help in different situations. The song shows a different side of the Beatles, who are generally known for their cheerful and catchy songs. It is a testament to their versatility, as they could successfully convey strong emotions like desperation and softness, defying the perception of a "one-dimensional" band.
