Great Is Thy Faithfulness
2nd Chapter Of Acts Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my father
There is no shadow of turning with thee
Thou changest not, thy compassions they fail not
As thou hast been thou forever wilt be

And great is thy faithfulness
Great is thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
All I have needed thy hand hath provided
Great is thy faithfulness
Lord unto me

Summer and winter, springtime and harvest
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love

And great is thy faithfulness
Great is thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
All I have needed thy hand hath provided
Great is thy faithfulness
Lord unto me

Pardon for sin and peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow
Blessings all mine with ten thousand beside

And great is thy faithfulness
Great is thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
All I have needed thy hand hath provided

Great is thy faithfulness
Lord unto me

Overall Meaning

The writer of the hymn "Great is Thy Faithfulness" draws attention to the faithfulness and unchanging nature of God in the lyrics. This is apparent in the opening lines which state "Great is thy faithfulness, O God my father, there is no shadow of turning with thee." God is understood as constant, unchanging, and reliable. The writer goes further to describe God as the source of all the good things that he has experienced in his life. The writer notes that God's compassion never fails, and that every new morning he sees a new mercy from God. The writer recognizes that everything he has ever needed, God has provided for him.

The writer also recognizes the role that nature plays in giving witness to God's faithfulness. The sun, moon, and stars are seen to move in their courses without error which is a symbol of the consistency of God. The presence of nature itself, with all its beauty and wonder, speaks to the consistency and unchanging nature of God. The writer concludes the hymn by noting that God's faithfulness is everlasting, and that there is nothing the writer needs that God cannot provide. God brings forgiveness, peace, joy, guidance, strength, and hope for the future.
