Light on my side as my ego becomes
A funky child with some words on my tongue
Be like intake of breath and my mouth gets loose
So while I scatter my spit, I dream of juice
Have you ever made out in dark hallways?
Displayed a kiss that made your day?
Or, say, play a track from your record collection
We changed a lot and then some, some
Know that we have always been down, down
If I ever didn't thank you, you
Then just let me do it now (come back in)
I bet you light up when we start the show
Follow me now, very close because I told you so
You know we glow because we throw sun rays
Yeah, we be freaky and we wanna stay, uh
We changed a lot and then some, some
Know that we have always been down, down
If I ever didn't thank you, you
Then just let me do it now
Lightning strikes, yo, we be in that violent force of light
Guaranteed to turn it out as bad as Dolemite
Because we're dope, kid, change like a chameleon
And the channel whenever the whack show "Real World" is on
You know we dazzle like ghetto box boomin' battles
Rattle inside your head, feel redeemed like cola bottles
Fall in love with your teachers, on the wax we are self made

Changed a lot and then some, some
Know that we have always been down, down
If I ever didn't thank you, you
Then just let me do it now
Keep my feet on the ground
Keep my head in the clouds
Electrified by the sound
It comes from the down, and
We changed a lot and then some, some
Know that we have always been down, down
If I ever didn't thank you, you
Then just let me do it now
The song "Down" by 311 is a fusion of hip-hop, rock, and funk music. The lyrics of the song talk about relationships, music, and appreciation. The first verse talks about the feeling of being alive and energized while listening to music. The singer describes the feeling of being in a good mood, feeling funky and free, and dreaming of something sweet β "juice". The second verse talks about making memories, playing music from your personal record collection, and displaying affection in dark hallways. The chorus of the song talks about how the band "changed a lot and then some" but they've always been "down", referencing the band's origins and the message of staying true to oneself.
The lyrics of the third verse are a wordplay between lightning, violent force of light, and the band's electrifying power. The word "dope" is slang for excellent, and the band describes themselves as chameleons who change their style but always keep their identity. The verse also references the reality show "Real World" to describe the band's ability to switch channels in life and music. The fourth verse is a blend of metaphors and analogies, describing the band's unique and eclectic style, and their love for music and learning.
Overall, the lyrics of "Down" by 311 convey a positive and upbeat message about being yourself, appreciating life's little pleasures, and staying true to your roots.

I spent a decade looking for this song. I heard it playing on the radio once & thought it sounded really familiar. I asked everyone else in the car what it was but no one would tell me
I heard small bits of it a few other times after that, but never got enough to go off of
I tried everything. I looked up every band I could think of that plays similar music & listened through all of their songs I haven't already heard
I used that app (I think it's called soundhound or something) so many times & sung the tune into it but I didn't know the words. It gave me nothing
then by pure chance, one day it came on while I was listening to Lithium (it's a satellite radio station) I was so excited, I can't even describe the feeling when I realized that I finally had the name of the song
I love this song so much. It means so much to me in large part because of how long it took me to find it

@Teddy Baker Yo!
I started with years of "90s Alternative" on Pandora and Spotify.
Nothing.
I then went to Wikipedia and tried to manually type in all the top 100 songs of 91, 92, 93, etc.
Too much work, and still nothing.
Then, one day, 311 is playing in the background, I think, "oh crap, these vocals, I think that's the artist I'm looking for."
I immediately search songs by 311, and BAM! Here we are!
The madness has finally come to an end lol
Daniel Marquis
I love how 311 blended different styles together to make something really innovative, especially for the 90βs. During this time, I donβt think anyone sounded like 311.
Not Socrates
They always felt like a Sublime ripoff, I know they are not, but it's what I used to think as a teenager when they came out.
Justin Beard
Yeah. And the media called them both βskaβ bands at one time. 311 doesnβt have enough punk in their style (not to mention, no horn section) to be ska. Sublime had a few ska songs but had that punk influence. 311 is a much more diverse band. Theyβve got metal, hip hop, raggae, and electronic influences. Sublime is mostly just either punk or raggae with rap record/club beat samples. But I like them both dearly from childhood.

Youβre right

Except for nirvana and the red hot chilli peppers.
Unreliable Narrator
Very few did, but you're mostly correct. They were different, especially for the 90s

This song goes out to my dearly departed pal John G! He was a true bro-ski who would help you with food or a place to crash, offered sound advice, was a great listener, knew how to spread good laughter, excellent taste in music, and he is missed everyday

Someday 100 years from now someone will see this and look him up and remember him. RIP all those lost too soon.π€

Sounds like one of us true blood teens of the 90's like myself. We was true threw and threw.
