My Heart Sings

Not in anger, but in danger of calling you
My mind's a long, long way from it was dead
And now the good times just keep drifting back in, whoa
[Bridge]
Breathe it on out the end will come so freely
You'll figure it out the answer will come so clearly dear
Hard it is to set you free
It's so much easier that way
[Chorus:]
My heart sings when I think of you
That is what you do
A melody that will settle me
That is just the thought of you
My heart sings and it's time you knew, yeah
My heart sings
I'm not made of stone, I'm only flesh and bone
I'm half crazy and amazed that you are alone
Let's sit on the shore, watch the ocean breathe (sit and watch the ocean breathe)
It's getting dark but we both don't want to leave, whoa
[Bridge]
Breathe it on out the end will come so freely
You'll figure it out the answer will come so clearly dear
Let it all go cause we can't know just what will be
Hard it is to set you free
It's so much easier that way
[Chorus]
My heart sings when I think of you
That is what you do
A melody that will settle me
That is just the thought of you
My heart sings and it's time you knew, yeah
My heart sings [Repeats: x1]
Whoa, whoa, whoa
My heart sings, my heart sings when I think of you, yeah
You wake up me when I'm lost at sea
Bring me back to you, yeah
We can know just what we'll be
What the future brings
But my heart sings
My heart sings [Repeats: x1]
The song "My Heart Sings" by 311 is a heartfelt ballad that discusses the strong emotional feelings the lead singer has towards someone he is separated from. The lyrics begin with the singer contemplating contacting this person - "Not in anger, but in danger of calling you" - indicating that he is struggling with some kind of urge to reconnect with someone who was once significant in his life. He reflects on how he has changed since their time together, and he is surprised to find that he is remembering the good moments they shared a lot more easily than before. The song then transitions into a bridge that advises the listener to let go of their fears and anxieties about the future because it is impossible to know what lies ahead. The chorus repeats the idea that the thought of this individual alone is enough to make his heart sing, and he wants them to know that.
The second half of the song sees the singer musing on his own feelings and vulnerabilities. He acknowledges that he is not invincible and expresses a sense of confusion about why this person with whom he had such an intense connection is not present in his life. A feeling of nostalgia is prevalent throughout: "Let's sit on the shore, watch the ocean breathe...It's getting dark but we both don't want to leave". The bridge returns, and the song concludes on the repetition of the chorus and a final plea from the singer for this other person to "bring me back to you".
Overall, "My Heart Sings" is a beautiful song about love, vulnerability, and the memories that stick with us long after we've lost somebody. It's a song about the importance of connection, and the hope that even when relationships sour, the warmth and comfort they once provided will stay with us always.
