Jackson was born and raised in South Jamaica, a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. His mother Sabrina, a drug dealer, died in a fire when he was 8. Since his father had already abandoned the family, young Curtis was sent to live with his grandparents. Growing up during the crack epidemic of the 80s and 90s, Jackson dealt drugs when he wasn't "killing time" at school or boxing at a local gym. His grandparents assumed he was at after-school programs when he was out selling crack. In tenth grade, Jackson was caught with guns and drug money passing through the metal detectors at Andrew Jackson High School in Queens. In 1994, Jackson was arrested again for selling vials of cocaine to an undercover officer, and three weeks later he was arrested yet-again after police found heroin, crack cocaine, and a starter pistol in his home. Jackson was sentenced to 3 to 9 years in prison, but opted to join a 6 month boot camp program and get his GED. Around this time, Jackson began going by "50 Cent," inspired by deceased Brooklyn stick-up man Kelvin "50 Cent" Martin.
After leaving drug dealing to pursue a rap career, he released his debut album Guess Who's Back Again in 2002. He was discovered by Eminem and Dr. Dre and then signed to Interscope Records. He has since released Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2003), The Massacre (2006), Curtis (2007) and Before I Self Destruct (2009).
50 Cent has engaged in feuds with other rappers including Jay-Z, Ja Rule, The Game, Cam'ron, Fat Joe, and Rick Ross. He has also pursued an acting career, appearing in the semi-autobiographical film Get Rich or Die Tryin' in 2005, the Iraq War film Home of the Brave in 2006, and Righteous Kill in 2008. 50 Cent is one of the richest hip-hop performers, having a net worth estimated at US $440 million in 2008.
Before 50 Cent ever inked a major deal, he built up a substantial fan base in New York through underground mixtapes. 50 Cent met up with Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC and was signed to his label to write all of Jayβs music. After heβd left JMJ, he signed to Columbia Records in 1996. On this label, he released Power of the Dollar, and the singles How to Rob and Ghetto Qua Ran. Columbia Records released him from the label after being shot on May 24th, 2000.
Around this time, Eminem had heard one of 50 Centβs demo tapes and expressed a huge interest in him on MTV, as did Dr. Dre. Shortly after this, 50 Cent officially signed to Interscope Records. He was the first rapper to sign to the joint label owned by Dr. Dre and Eminem. The first song he released on this record was entitled Wanksta and was featured on the 8 Mile soundtrack.
In its first week of release, his debut βGet Rich Or Die Tryinββ sold 872,000 units - easily reaching Gold status. Within the second week it went Platinum (1 mil) and on April 12th, 2004 the RIAA certified it six times Platinum.
In 2005 he followed the success of his album Get Rich or Die Tryinβ with a new release - The Massacre (originally called St. Valentines Day Massacre until the release date was pushed back). The first single released off this, Disco Inferno, was a huge hit - he followed this hit up by the release of Candy Shop and then again with Just a Lil Bit.
In 2003 Interscope Records allowed 50 Cent to have his own label - G-Unit Records. He first signed Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo and Young Buck as the established members of G-Unit Records. In 2004, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent had signed The Game under a joint venture.

[Chorus]
I get money, money is got (I I get it)
I get money, money is got (I I get it)
I get money, money is got (Yeah)
Money I got, money is got (I run New York!)
I get money, money is got (I I get it)
I get money, money is got (Yeah yeah)
Money I got, money is got (I run New York!)
I take quarter water sold it in bottles for 2 bucks,
Coca-Cola came and bought it
For billions, what the fuck?
Have a baby by me; baby
Be a millionaire
I write the check before the baby comes,
Who the fuck cares
I'm stanky rich
I'ma die trying to spend this shit
Southside's up in in this bitch
Yeah i smell like the vault
I used to sell dope
I did play the block
Now i play on boats
In the south of France
Baby, St. Tropez
Get a tan? I'm already black
Rich? I'm already that
Gangsta, get a gat
Hit a head in a hat
Call that a riddle rap
Shit, fuck the chitter chat
I'm the baker, i bake the bread
The barber, i cut ya head
The marksman, i spray the lead
"I blood clot, chop ya leg"
Do not fuck with the kid
I get biz wit the cigg
I come where you live
Ya dead!
[Chorus]
You can call this my new shit
But it ain't new tho
I got rid of my old bitch
Now i got new hoes
First is was the Benzo
Now I'm in the Enzo, Ferrari, I'm sorry!
I keep blowin up! (Oh!!)
They call me the cake man
The strawberry shake man
I spray the AR
Make your whole click break dance
Backspin, head spin, flat line, ya dead then
9 shells, Mac-10,
"who wan get it cracking?!"
I was young, i couldn't do good
Now i cant do bad
I ride, wreck the new Jag
I just buy the new Jag
Now nigga why you mad?
Oh you cant do that
I'm so forgetful, they calling me cocky
I come up out the jeweler, they calling me Rocky
Its the ice on my neck man, the wrist and my left hand
Bling like
You like my style
Ha ha 'm heading to the bank right now
[Chorus]
Yeah, I talk the talk, and I walk the walk
Like a Teflon Don, but i run New York
When i come outta court, yea i pop the Colt
I keep it gangsta, have ya outlined in chalk
I I get it,
In the hood if ya ask about me
They'll tell ya I'm bout my bread
I I get it,
Round the world if ya ask about me
They'll tell ya they love the kid
I I get it,
Whoa hey
I I get it,
Whoa hey
I I get it,
Whoa hey
Yeah,
Whoa hey
I run New York!
Whoa hey
I I get it,
Whoa hey
I I get it,
Whoa hey
Yeah, yeah,
Whoa hey
I run New York!
Whoa
I get money, money is got
I'm back on the streets man,
I get money, money is got
I'm bringing the heat man,
I get money, money is got
I'm on my grind,
Money I got, money is got
Like all the time,
I get money, money is got
Trying to stop my shine,
I get money, money is got
Ill cock my 9
Don't get outta line,
Money I got, money is got
I said don't get outta line
I I get it
I I get it
Yeah, yeah.
The song "I Get Money" by 50 Cent feat. Justin Timberlake & Timbaland is a braggadocious, flashy anthem about the rapper's wealth and achievements. The chorus repeats the phrase "money is got" and "I get it" multiple times, emphasizing the central theme of financial success. The verses describe various ways 50 Cent has made his wealth, including selling quarter water for $2 and writing checks before his baby is born. He raps about his lavish lifestyle, owning boats and vacationing in France. He also talks about his past as a drug dealer and references violence, declaring that he keeps a gun on him.
The lyrics of "I Get Money" reflect the ego-centric and materialistic values present in many hip hop and popular culture songs. The repeated phrase "money is got" reinforces the idea that money equals success and importance. The references to violence and drug dealing also perpetuate harmful stereotypes about black men and their involvement in criminal activities.
Interestingly, the song has been referenced and remixed in various other media works. The chorus of the song served as inspiration for the parody song "I Got a Jar of Dirt" from the 2007 film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Additionally, the song was sampled in the remix of Lil Wayne's "A Milli".
