Before my husband of 45 yrs. passed away, he told me he wanted this played at his service. I knew this would be the last thing I could do for him. So it was played. Few years ago my grandmother fell ill and I bought her to my home to care for her while she was on hospice . I sat with her ever day all day the two weeks she was at my home . I took a break and went into the dinning room and had my music playing Spirit in the sky was playing on my play list . I turned it up little enough so she could here it comfortably I always loved the song and I’m sure my grandmother heard it thro the years as well . After the song played I went back to my grandmothers bed side . I held her hand we talked and told each other we loved one another and still holding her hand she passed away peacefully . I cryed like a baby and so glad we shared the song together . Now in 2022 I just loss my husband of 30 years to stage 4 pancreatic cancer at our home as well my heart is broken I play this song and feel my husband and grandmother close to me but Jesus calls them back he needs them back home with him . We will all see our loved ones one day but until then they visit us 🙏💕

My husband just passed from brain cancer and also had ALS . He also had Hospice care and I cared for him in his final days. Played this song many times so he could hear it and also played I believe in you and me. By the Four Tops. Was our wedding song. After I played that song a tear came down his cheek and he peacefully passed on to Spirit in the Sky. So glad to have been able to have him hear this song before passing. I love and miss him so much and the pain hurts me so much.

I remember when I was in 6th grade, the Church I worshiped at with the rest of My Family had a Choir of High School students called "The Odyssey Choir" that sang songs like "Morning Has Broken" by Cat Stevens, "M.r.s. When I went to California to try my job skills, I went there hopeful, but got so depressed, I tried to jump my car off the Hauser Creek bridge outside of San Diego. As I was driving on it to see if the service gates were open to launch 500 feet down, this song came on. Well of all things, God sent this song to me to come back to the church. Now I am a saved Catholic again, the line of "you got to have a friend in Jesus", hit home. Now even with all my issues going on, at least I have the comfort of His Holy Word to keep me going.

I guess there's no point in telling you that the guy who wrote this song wasn't, isn't Christian? He's an Orthodox Jew who wrote the song as a lark to see if he could write something comparable to what he heard on TV. He was looking to copy a style, and that line you're so fond of was inserted because it did just that.

Your post reminded me of a very old joke when a monk realized they'd mis-translated the word CELEBRATE for CELIBATE. Seems like a real waste of humanity.

How about another mistranslation? The Hebrew words for 'on' and 'beside' were the same (and Hebrew is not a language with a lot of depth like English and I know this as I am reasonably fluent in it) so the phrase was "Jesus walked beside the water" not "Jesus walked on the water".

So much wasted anger, breath and punishment meted out by a Church that in their drive to separate the Church from its Jewish origins, they really went after us choosing to ignore the fact that Jesus was a Jew first.

This song was huge in Hungary and Germany right when it came out. Hungarian Radio, Radio Free Europe's Teenager Party, Radio Luxemburg, American Forces Radio & Television Network, etc. But I never saw this promotional music video clip until February 2023. The song is a classic for 1000 years, the music clip is out of this world, too.

I was a teenager when this song was a huge hit on the radio back in 1970. Back in June of 2016 at the Paul Kantner (Jefferson Airplane & Starship) Memorial Concert, Norman Greenbaum joined the Jefferson Starship on stage to sing, Spirit In the Sky. He brought many of us who knew Paul Kantner to tears in a joyous way singing his song.

I saw a Greenbaum interview where he said in a good-humored way that over the years, most of the fan feedback for this song involved two questions: "How do you get that sound from your guitar?" and complaints from Christians about the "I've never been a sinner" line.

Greenbaum said that he admitted to his Christian critics that he goofed, insofar as he didn't research the finer theological points of his "gospel-ish rock" song when he wrote it. But he added that the song was out there now, so there wasn't anything he could do about it. 😎🎸

Late 60's or early 70's , I was at a Grand funk railroad concert, in Long Beach California, tripping on LSD, when I heard this song for the first time! It caused me to think about Jesus! That Later turned my life around!!!

Nobody, including Norman Greenbaum, has been able to reproduce that wicket guitar sound. He's not exactly sure how he created it but it's a classic.

Norman had the Fender Telecaster you see in the video that had circuitry built in to "fuzz" the guitar sound. Russell DaSheill played lead guitar on the sessions and said that he used a Gibson SG for the guitar work. The stuttering guitar sound in between the verses is the pickup switch being flicked back and forth from an active guitar pickup and one turned down. Both Greeenbaum and DaSheill were using Marshall amplifiers for the record. It is a classic and still holds up today.

I just attended my best Friends Funeral and for the first funeral I've ever attended, this song was played. I know he was smiling along with everyone in attendance, the Preacher even said after many Funerals it was a first for him as well, RIP Joe!!

@James Neal I've heard the Kinks sliced the speaker cone with a razor blade. Before that, Link Wray poked holes in his speaker with a pencil. The first known example of distortion on a recording was Marty Robbins bass on a song called "Don't Worry." Don't accept any of this as gospel, but if you do an interweb search, you should find articles supporting these claims.

I’ve read that the actual equipment they were using had a flaw and they’ve been unable to duplicate it. But, I’ve also read “According to The New York Times article, Greenbaum used a Fender Telecaster guitar with a fuzz box built into the body”
