71 Gaps Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was the one that looked over.
The one they thought would always leave.
I was the one that looked over.
So when your home just think of me.

I tried so hard to make you stay.
To make you think that I was still cool.
It didn't make anything work.
Its not meant to be.

You thought I'd fall.
You that I'd fell.
You thought I'd lose but look at me now.
You thought I'd fall.
You thought I'd fell.
You thought I'd lose but look at me now.

I never understood my life.
I never thought you'd understand.
I was the one that looked over.
So when your home just think of me.

I tried so hard to make you stay.
To make you think that I was still cool.
It didnt make anything work.
If its not meant to be.

You thought I'd fall.
You that I'd fell.
You thought I'd lose but look at me now.
You thought I'd fall.
You thought I'd fell.
You thought I'd lose but look at me now.

You thought I'd fall.
You thought I'd lose.
You thought I'd fail but look at me now.

But look at me now.
But look at me now

Overall Meaning

The song "Hometown" by 71 Gaps is a reflection on the way others see us and the way we see ourselves. The singer sings about being the one who was always overlooked, the one who was assumed to leave and never come back. Despite his efforts to make a relationship work, it eventually fell apart. He sings that he never understood his life and didn't think the other person would understand his perspective either. The chorus repeats the statement that the other person thought he would fail, but in the end, he has succeeded.

The lyrics are a reminder that we often judge people based on appearances or assumptions, and we don't always see their true potential. The singer was written off as someone who would never make anything of himself, but he has proven his doubters wrong. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes this point and serves as a triumphant declaration of his success.

Overall, "Hometown" is a song about perseverance and overcoming obstacles. It encourages us to look beyond our initial judgments of others and to believe in ourselves, even when others doubt us.

I was really into this band when I was 12. Found them by total chance while downloading Boxcar Racer songs. What a great blast from the past. Thanks for uploading.

about the same. Its such a shame we can't find 71 gaps on Deezer. It seems it wasn't a very famous band even back then, I don't even know how I came across those songs at the time we didnt have you tube !

I was going through a box in my apartment the other day and I came across the original 71 Gaps CD. The very first one we burned with the first printing of the artwork that I did in my high school art room.

Stank

71 gaps was so ahead of their time. Click-baiting on file-sharing apps to promote their music.

@Stank No one in the band ever owned up to that. I never found out who actually did it. I'd love to know, it was genius.

@Jess Baumung I remember putting the artwork into all the blank CD-R cases in the front seat on the way to a show in Brandon
