If I Fell
8. The Beatles Lyrics

Would you promise to be true
And help me understand
'Cause I've been in love before
And I found that love was more
Than just holding hands
If I give my heart to you
From the very start
That you would love me more than her
If I trust in you oh please
Don't run and hide
If I love you too oh please
Don't hurt my pride like her
'Cause I couldn't stand the pain
And I would be sad if our new love was in vain
So I hope you see that I
Would love to love you
And that she will cry
When she learns we are two
'Cause I couldn't stand the pain
And I would be sad if our new love was in vain
So I hope you see that I
Would love to love you
And that she will cry
When she learns we are two
If I fell in love with you
The Beatles’ song “If I Fell” is a love song that explores the vulnerability and hesitation that can come with falling in love. The first two lines of the song express the fear of being hurt and the need for reassurance in a new relationship. The singer is asking if their potential partner would be willing to truly commit to them and support them emotionally. The next two lines reveal that the singer has been in love before, but doesn’t want to settle for a superficial relationship where two people just hold hands.
The middle section of the song shifts to the idea that if the singer gives their heart to this person, they must be sure that they will love them more than anyone else. The inclusion of the line “her” suggests that the singer may have been betrayed in the past and is now cautious about opening themselves up again. The next line "If I trust in you, oh please don't run and hide" likely refers to the fear of being rejected, and the urgency of needing a partner to be honest and open with them. The singer then asks their potential partner to not hurt their pride, like the previous love did, because the pain would be too much to bear.
The final section of the song repeats that the singer would be sad if their newfound love was in vain, emphasizing the importance of honesty and communication in a relationship. Despite the potential for hurt and disappointment, the song ends on a positive note as the singer expresses their desire to love and be loved by this person.

If I Fell is the most beautiful medium tempo ballad ever, imo. The haunting melody is a one of a kind. I find it more moving than Yesterday.

teddyhug6 ...good ear. The 2009 remaster is sped up. Horrible feel.

Take a listen to "The Warmth of The Sun" by The Beach Boys. Smoke a joint, put some headphones on, cover yourself up in warm blankets, think about the last time you got heartbroken lol. Guarantee you'll be in tears. Btw I'm an extreme Beatles and Beach Boys fan. I'm not saying either song/band is better than the other. But for me The Beatles are my life.

Me too. This song tells much more and it has a stronger meaning for the one you love!
