In The Line Of Duty
8Ball & MJG Lyrics

[MJG]
Listen officer I know I got a traffic warrant
But yo wife got 3. So where the fuck is she?
You don't know
So you bring your personal problems back to your job
And every damn day you make it hard
You can't understand when you see a black man
Rollin in a new ride gotta pull him over and
Gotta check the inside, Hell
Who in the fuck do you claim to be?
My help or my hurt cause you ain't did shit for me
See, every time I rolls and every time I walks
Every time I breathe and every time I talks
I'm always being heard or either being watched
By scary as white folks or crooked ass cops
They comin' they searchin'
They pat me on my ass
The sons of a slave owner's son from the past
I laughs, knowing that these fellas must be jealous
They want our autographs but they don't know how to tell us
It's crazy the way you treat my kind
You call this your job?
The system must have brainwashed your mind
I really resent the rules a cop abuse within a day
So if you keep talking that shit
Is it my duty to blow you away?

[MJG]
Punk ass, rookie ass, sissy ass motherfuckin' police.
Always in as motherfucker's shit
I just got out the motherfucking county

[8BALL]
I'm supposed to love America
But Amerikkka don't love me
The son of the slave of the father of this country
Free wasn't meant to be a luxury for you and I
Freedom came after many influential people died
In vain it seems, ain't a whole lot changed
They still crackin' whips and shacklin' up niggaz mayne
Projects ain't nothing but modern day plantations
And the masters reside at the police station
Replacing whips with berettas and clips on they hips
Quick to gang up on young brothas who make that grip
I used to think that stackin' papers would eliminate
lack of pussy to fuck and police that playa hate
I found out that a bitch is gonna be a bitch
And the police could give a fuck that a nigga'z rich
Old white men from the days of the cotton pickers
That used to ride around on pickup trucks lynching niggaz
That's them same peckrwoods actin' like a hoe
When they see a nigga moving in next door
In front of my own home rough me up and harass me
And say they did it all in the line of duty

[8BALL]
Coward ass police
Bustaz hiding behind a badge
All in a nigga face, cause you can bee strapped
I can be strapped too hoe!
Running with your gang
I'm runnin' with my gang bitch!
You know what I'm sayin'?
You betta steep off this Pimp shit hoe!

[MJG]
Here come the motherfucking plain clothes
Riding low-pro in a 4-door '95 Caprice
Trade mark of the police
Each and every damn Nigga, Wetback, and Hu Chank
Need to recognize 'fore your motherfucking ship sank
I don't think these laws have no love for minority
This is how I know it be
So FUCK the Majority!
Pick 'em out 1 by 1
Shoot 'em down with my gun
Take 'em to the woods no mistake
Concrete shoes in the lake!
I Hate playa hatin' perpetratin' cops!
The nerds of the school wanna run my fuckin' block
You wanna know my name well trick it's MJG
So miss me with that shit PST you'z a beast see
What in the fuck do you expect to gain?
Constantly pullin' me over
Constantly throwing your salt into my game
You lame, Weak Bustaz, can't do me
Especially when you're out or even in the line of duty

[8BALL]
I aint takin' it
Police hatin' the shit I represent
STREET SENSE, GLOCK TOTIN', RIPPIN' PIG'S CHESTS OPEN
Hatin' them like they hate me soon as they see
Another colored brother flappin in some luxury!
All in my ass with some gloves looking for some drugs
Dogs sniff my balls Hell Naw it ain't no love
Catch you slippin on your off-day and Spray yo ass!
Into thee past as I fire up one and hit the gas
I never did it but them bustaz make me wanna do it
Pull out the Tech in a sec'
And leave them in the street wet
But that won't solve nothing
All that'll do is get me time
So I choose to write this rhyme
And dick them hoes in every line
Sometimes, my mind wonders would the world be shocked
If we all did like Pac
And bucked cops when we got stopped
Betcha shit straighten up and start flying right
Bitch it's judgement night
In the line of duty

[MJG]
WTF y'all punk motherfuckers lookin' for?
WTF do you see?
Shit, gotdamn thang!
Talking about WTF you smell.
It ain't here, Bitch!
You can't prove shit!
Leave me the fuck alone, gotdamnit
Is my tags outta date hoe? hell nah gotdamnit
Do I gotta motherfucking traffic warrant? Fuck naw
Am I on yo motherfuckin' warrant list? Nah Bitch
So why thee fuck you all up in my motherfuckin' shit gotdamnit?
I can't help it cause your wife pussy aint hittin' right gotdamnit
I can't help it cause your son made straight F's gotdamnit
I ain't got shit to do wit that shit gotdamnit
I can't help it cause you ain't paid the mortgage yet bitch!

Overall Meaning

The song "In The Line of Duty" by 8Ball & MJG is a critical dissection of systemic racism and police brutality presented through the perspective of two Black men. The lyrics outline the frustrations and mistreatment experienced by the duo as a result of being stopped, searched, and harassed by law enforcement officers. The sentiment expressed is that police are not doing their job of serving and protecting, but rather using their authority to intimidate and mistreat Black people. This is shown through the lyrics: "I really resent the rules a cop abuse within a day. So if you keep talking that sh*t is it my duty to blow you away?" Given that the verses describe the everyday harassment of these Black men along with their anger, it is easy to draw parallels to recent protests and the Black Lives Matter movement.

The lyrics structure is explicitly rebellious and provocative, describing officers in derogatory terms such as "peckrwoods" and "cows." They are shown to reflect unfounded biases when it comes to Black people and have no interest in those they "serve and protect." Instead, the song maintains that these officers use their power to oppress and intimidate Black people, and in turn, the law implicitly endorses their actions. The song highlights the ongoing systemic racial issues in America and reflects anger over the persistent failure to address these issues.

Line by Line Meaning

Listen officer I know I got a traffic warrant But yo wife got 3. So where the fuck is she? You don't know So you bring your personal problems back to your job And every damn day you make it hard
I acknowledge that I have a traffic warrant and don't contest that. But, maybe if you paid more attention to your wife's legal issues (she has three warrants), you would be too busy to harass me for no reason. Instead, you take your personal problems and frustrations out on me daily making my life harder than it needs to be.

You can't understand when you see a black man Rollin in a new ride gotta pull him over and Gotta check the inside, Hell Who in the fuck do you claim to be?
You are incapable of seeing a Black man driving a decent car without assuming that there must be something suspicious and pulling them over. Who do you think you are? Making assumptions and targeting people for no reason just because of the color of their skin.

My help or my hurt cause you ain't did shit for me See, every time I rolls and every time I walks Every time I breathe and every time I talks I'm always being heard or either being watched By scary as white folks or crooked ass cops
I have never seen you help me in any way, but instead, every time I move, I feel like I'm being monitored and listened to by either racist white citizens or corrupt police officials, which puts me in a position of vulnerability.

They comin' they searchin' They pat me on my ass The sons of a slave owner's son from the past I laughs, knowing that these fellas must be jealous They want our autographs but they don't know how to tell us
They keep coming and searching me unnecessarily and treating me with disrespect. It's worth noting that these same police officers come from families of slave owners who had everything handed to them. They envy Black folks but will never show it, and they secretly want to be like us, but they are too consumed with their toxic hatred to admit it outwardly.

It's crazy the way you treat my kind You call this your job? The system must have brainwashed your mind I really resent the rules a cop abuse within a day So if you keep talking that shit Is it my duty to blow you away?
It's insane how poorly you treat me and others like myself, and you have the audacity to claim that it's your job. The system has to have brainwashed you to treat human beings like this. I dislike the way you twist and misrepresent the law to suit your own agenda, so if you continue with that behavior, is it my responsibility to eliminate the threat?

I'm supposed to love America But Amerikkka don't love me The son of the slave of the father of this country Free wasn't meant to be a luxury for you and I Freedom came after many influential people died
I'm aware that I'm meant to love this country, but this country rarely shows any love or respect towards us. It's worth noting that I'm the son of someone who was enslaved by the founders of this country. Despite their promises, freedom did not come easily, and the fight for it cost the lives of several influential people.

Projects ain't nothing but modern day plantations And the masters reside at the police station Replacing whips with berettas and clips on they hips Quick to gang up on young brothas who make that grip
Projects are nothing more than modern-day versions of plantations, with the police serving as the new and improved slave masters. Instead of using physical whips to punish, they have guns and ammunition that they are quick to use against young Black men who are doing well for themselves.

Old white men from the days of the cotton pickers That used to ride around on pickup trucks lynching niggaz That's them same peckrwoods actin' like a hoe When they see a nigga moving in next door In front of my own home rough me up and harass me And say they did it all in the line of duty
The same old white men who used to ride around in pickup trucks lynching Black folks are now acting like cowards, bowing down to us as neighbors because they're too scared to do anything else. However, in the presence of their fellow officers, they will abuse their power and violate the civil rights of Black people. This often happens in front of Black people's homes, leading to unwarranted discrimination and harassment.

I aint takin' it Police hatin' the shit I represent STREET SENSE, GLOCK TOTIN', RIPPIN' PIG'S CHESTS OPEN Hatin' them like they hate me soon as they see Another colored brother flappin in some luxury!
I'm not going to stand for it anymore. Police hate me solely because of the way I look and the things I represent, like street smarts, gun ownership, and an overall rejection of the system. They immediately hate me when they see me with nice things or a fancy car, as if I am not allowed to have anything nice in life.

Sometimes, my mind wonders would the world be shocked If we all did like Pac And bucked cops when we got stopped Betcha shit straighten up and start flying right Bitch it's judgement night In the line of duty
I can't help but wonder if the world would be shocked if we all acted like Tupac and put up a resistance when police target us. I bet shit would change throughout the system if they knew we weren't just going to take it lying down. The idea of judgement night is looming as we exist in the line of duty with these corrupt officials.

Here come the motherfucking plain clothes Riding low-pro in a 4-door '95 Caprice Trade mark of the police Each and every damn Nigga, Wetback, and Hu Chank Need to recognize 'fore your motherfucking ship sank I don't think these laws have no love for minority This is how I know it be So FUCK the Majority!
Here come the undercover police, riding around in their sketchy 1995 Caprice, which is a trademark car for the police department. All people of color, including African Americans, Mexicans, and Asians, need to be aware of the injustice that is happening before the system sinks completely. Laws in this country don't have any sympathy towards minorities. It is for this reason that I say FUCK the Majority.

Pick 'em out 1 by 1 Shoot 'em down with my gun Take 'em to the woods no mistake Concrete shoes in the lake! I Hate playa hatin' perpetratin' cops! The nerds of the school wanna run my fuckin' block You wanna know my name well trick it's MJG So miss me with that shit PST you'z a beast see What in the fuck do you expect to gain? Constantly pulling me over Constantly throwing your salt into my game You lame, Weak Bustaz, can't do me Especially when you're out or even in the line of duty
I feel like the only way to make an impact is to go after these corrupt police officers one by one, shooting them down with my gun and dumping their bodies in the lake. I hate these cowardly officers who come into my community acting like they aren't the scrawny nerds from school trying to control large, proud Black men. My name is MJG, and I won't stand for your slanderous words. You can't gain anything from constantly pulling me over and interrupting my day, adding fuel to the fire. You pathetic amateurs are unable to bring me down, even when you're supposedly 'in the line of duty.'
