Perry Pelonero and Kim Welsh are a music duo and couple who have been working together for five years. They are currently writing for their A*Star project, which is named after their daughter Ada. Perry enjoyed success with his Boston shoegaze band Skylight in the early 1990’s. He and guitarist Brent Martino brought it back in 2007 and added Kim on vocals. In 2008, Perry and Kim formed the band Bliss.City.East and Eric D’Asto joined soon after. In 2010, Perry and Kim partnered with Dean Garcia (of Curve) and released an EP as Morpheme. Perry also writes and plays guitar for Garcia’s SPC ECO project. They have provided guest production and music tracks for many bands across the globe. Kim and Perry own an instructional video production company in Chicago, where they live with their family." -- Official Bio from the A*Star Bandcamp (used with permission)
In the summer of 2012 Perry and Kim were joined by drummer, multi-musician Ian Baird (Spring Clock Wonder) and Guitarist Michael Parkin (aka Mike Parkin; Beijing Tangs). The fall saw the return of Gianfranco Ventura (bassist from their previous project Bliss.City.East), and in the spring of 2013 longtime friend David Loucks (Jazzblaster) began playing with the group.
"First we were in Skylight. Then we made Bliss.City.East. Then we we made a baby called Ada Star. Then we were in Morpheme. Then we worked on a bunch of other projects together and separately (SPC ECO, Beijing Tangs, etc.)" -- Kim Welsh & Perry Pelonero

I Will Be
A*STAR Lyrics

But you don't get to sleep in, still dreaming
And everybody only wants to fight
You're up against never being right
When the worries of the world hold your feet
And there's little left to believe in
Today, today, it's gonna be a better one
Today, today, it's gonna be a better one
There's nothing more to take in, going wrong
There's nothing more to take in, going wrong
Old pale memories of someone you knew
Keep crawling through the back of your mind, stealin' time
And in the daylight, you're crossing all your wires
You never knew just how to put out a fire
And the closet's been shaken with bones
Little reminders that you're out on your own
Today, today, it's gonna be a better one
There's nothing more to take in, going wrong
Today, today, it's gonna be a better one
There's nothing more to take in, going wrong
There's nothing more to take in, going wrong
Today, today, keep your head and drive again
There's nothing more to battle and you go
Today, today, it's gonna be a better one
There's nothing more to take in, going wrong
There's nothing more to take in, going wrong
The lyrics of A*STAR's "I Will Be" speak to the experience of feeling overwhelmed by life and its various challenges. The opening lines describe waking up to a cold morning and feeling stuck in a state of half-awake dreaming, while everyone else seems ready to fight. The singer feels the weight of the world on their feet, and finds it hard to believe in anything.
The chorus provides a glimmer of hope in the midst of this struggle. The repeated refrain that "today it's gonna be a better one" seems almost like a mantra, a way to anchor oneself in the present moment and focus on the possibility of a brighter future. The song acknowledges the difficulty of this task, with lines like "old pale memories of someone you knew keep crawling through the back of your mind, stealing time," and "you never knew just how to put out a fire." But ultimately, the message is one of resilience and perseverance. The closing lines suggest that it's possible to keep moving forward, even when the world feels like it's falling apart.
Overall, "I Will Be" is a powerful reminder of the power of hope and determination in the face of adversity. It's a song that speaks to the heart of what it means to be human, and encourages listeners to keep going even when things seem impossibly tough.
