It was founded by the singer and guitarrist Andrés Giménez in 1992 in Buenos Aires, Argentina with Aníbal Aló on drums and Marcelo Corvalán on bass and backing vocals.
They originally formed under the name of "Animal", but due to legal issues the name was quickly changed to the actual version. A.N.I.M.A.L.'s sound is that of heavy metal and most lyrics are in defense and in favor of ethnic minorities and original peoples of Latin America; this can be seen in many song titles like Solo Por Ser Indios ("Only For Being Indian"), Guerra De Razas ("Race War"), Poder Latino ("Latin Power") and Raza Castigada ("Punished Race").
The band's success grew taking it to play in most Latin American countries, the United States and Europe. In 1999, Iongtime bassist Marcelo "Corvata" Corvalan and then drummer Andres Vilanova (who joined the band at age 17, replacing Martín Carrizo) left the band . Marcelo and Andres were replaced by Cristian Lapolla and Marcelo Castro, however around this time the band entered a clear and slow downward spiral as many fans started losing interest in it.
After a year or so, Marcelo Castro was replaced by Javier Dorado who had briefly joined the band back in 1993 and was replaced in 2004 by Martín Carrizo who rejoined the band.
In 2006 it was announced that the band would take an indefinite break; this resulted in Martín Carrizo's (drummer) leaving the band and Andrés Giménez forming a new band called D'mente (word play meaning both demente ("lunatic") and devil mente ("devil mind", Andres' nickname).
Former members Marcelo "Corvata" Corvalan and Andres Vilanova now play together in the band carajo.
Los Que Marcan El Camino

Los que marcan el camino,
cada palabra como una granada de revolución,
sacrificaron su mundo para dárselo
a los demás y enseñarles el no
y hoy no podemos dejar de llevarlos en cada actitud.
No podemos olvidar!.
Uno entre muchos millones
pueblo a su destino,
fueron dejando la huella profunda
hacia la libertad, todo principio
es una enseñanza por eso ellos son...
Los que marcan el camino.
Herencia de sabios,
ejemplo de vida supieron dejar.
Respetados por ser nobles,
un momento de su historia
vive para siempre.
Vientos del ala huelen a libertad,
son los nuevos pioneros en su
inquieta ansiedad,
Mas! Mas! Mas!.
The lyrics to A.N.I.M.A.L.'s song Los Que Marcan El Camino discuss the legacy of individuals who led and inspired their communities towards revolutionary change. The song opens with a reference to their leadership, as "Punta de lanza, patrones del pueblo se hicieron llamar" translates to "Spearhead, patrons of the people they called themselves". These individuals are celebrated as "Los que marcan el camino" or "Those who mark the path", with their every word seen as a grenade of revolution. Their sacrifice is acknowledged, as they gave up their own worlds for the benefit of others and to teach them the way. The lyrics praise their influence, declaring that we cannot help but be influenced by them in every action we take. The chorus repeats the refrain "Mas! Mas! Mas!" which translates to "More! More! More!", indicating a desire for their legacy to continue and for the new generation to carry forth their principles.
The second verse begins with the acknowledgement that these leaders were just one among many millions, but they were able to guide the people towards their destiny. Their impact is described as leaving a deep footprint towards freedom, and every principle they espoused was a lesson to be learnt. They are depicted as an "herencia de sabios" or "legacy of the wise", and a shining example of how to live life. The moment of their history is said to live on forever, despite the fact that they themselves may have passed. The final lines echo the opening sentiments, as the lyrics describe the current generation as "los nuevos pioneros" or "the new pioneers" who are similarly driven by an "inquieta ansiedad" or "restless anxiety" and who have it in them to continue writing the story of revolution and progress.
Overall, the song celebrates the tremendous impact of revolutionary leaders who dedicated their lives to a cause greater than themselves, inspiring others to do the same and creating a positive legacy that continues to inspire future generations.
