Tear It Down
A.O.T.P Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Jesse to Congregation] Don't you take me to
Your preachers
And blind me with
Their teachings
Take your sorrowed souls
And give'em to the blind

Are the Gods that made you lying
To the bloodied faces
And never cry
How long you all
Been waiting to die

Blinded by your teachers
Now they'll be hiding
You'll be seeking
Will you give'em mercy
Hang'em on high
Johnny get your guns for dying
It's time for right'n all the wrongs they've lied
Give me a shotgun
Make it alright

Don't tell me your
Maker's laughing
You're bleeding the world he made

Shotgun the walls of wailing
Come tell me
When it starts again

Running for our lives - will ya

Tear down the walls and smile
God in Heaven save us all tonight

Overall Meaning

In "Tear It Down," A.O.T.P. addresses the dangers of religious indoctrination and the harm it can cause. The song begins with Jesse addressing the congregation, urging them not to blind him with their teachings and to take their sorrowed souls and give them to the blind. He questions whether the gods that made them are lying to the bloodied faces and how long they've been waiting to die. They have been blinded by their teachers, and now they will be hiding while they are the ones seeking, and Jesse wonders whether they will show mercy or hang them on high. Then it's time for Johnny to get his guns for dying because it's time to make things right. Jesse asks for a shotgun that will make everything all right.

The lyrics go on to implore the listener to shot gun the walls of wailing and come and tell him when it all starts again. The final verse is a desperate plea for God to save them all tonight as they are running for their lives. The song presents a haunting commentary on the dangers that can arise when individuals are indoctrinated into harmful beliefs and how it can lead to the loss of freedom and even life.

Nothing better than discovering something new that is exactly like what you grew up listening to in the 90's. I am thoroughly impressed.
