I also love the fact that the first thing Max remembers is Lucas saying "we're here, I'm here". because even though it may not look like words get through but it's still very important to hear those words. Sometimes it's so hard to believe that people will care or understand but the way Lucas has tried and tried to get Max to talk just makes me so emotional.

@Mrs.sprayberry The causes of depression and trauma dont matter. Both Max and Ashley have been through severe depression and greif and that's what matters, that's what she's relating to.
Pain is pain.

Ps: to clarify, im not at all saying Ashley's grandmother passing "doesn't matter", im just saying, comparing her grandmothers death to Billie's death is irrelevant because she's relating to the depression and greif max is going through. Sure, her grandmother lived a long life, but it still fucking hurts to lose family, no matter the age or cause of death.

Like there’s a big difference between watching your older brother who’s like 19 die a painful death in front of you than you grandma who has lived for 94 years and died peacefully 🫣

Sadie deserves AT LEAST a best supporting actress nomination but I think she deserves to win… beautiful performance by her. That episode also just felt so close to home to me as someone who lives with depression. I couldn’t stop crying after I watched it! Beautiful

Same. Vecna is by far the scariest creature yet. Not because of design or anything like that. But because of this. He preyed on max, and Fred, and Chrissy. And we as the viewers fear him for that. And Sadie and the duffer brothers did an incredible job portraying that. Same with the actors for Fred and Chrissy. They all had very real reactions and that’s what set him up to be so scary

I'm unashamed to admit that I cheered loudly when Eleven hit Angela with the roller skate. Although all the characters were horrified, and it led to Eleven's arrest, with how awful Angela was to our poor girl, you can't deny that she had it coming. The actress played her role extremely well!

Can we talk about how amazing the buildup was throughout all of episode 4?? As soon as they revealed that Max was going to be next I was actually on the edge of my seat until she was ok. And that final scene where she's running to her friends??? (AND the amazing music selection) Also had me in tears. When she got out I was just sobbing cause of how relieved I was, and just seeing her fight her way through everything she had been dealing with hit really hard. Episode 4 is 100% the best episode of the season so farrrr.

Everyone has not liked the Joyce/Hopper storyline this season but I liked it?? if they didn't include it, it would just be my heart beating out my chest for 1 hr straight like its tied enough to the main story while also giving us a bit of a break from all the tension going on.

i thought this too like it such an incredibly good metaphor for depression. and the large rock pieces falling while max was running could represent everything life throws at you and her running could represent fighting through it. and when she finally escapes her "im still alive" really got me. depression is tough and i think most of us who have experienced depression have had that "im still alive" moment.

We all cried at Max's scene because it was so, so heavy and so well done. It's a perfect visual look at grief and depression. How you assume there's no one around to talk to, no one that cares, no one to support. So you bottle it all up until you feel like you're destroying yourself. And then you remember the positives: there are people that care, there are people that love you, and it's all worth fighting for. But I love how they made Max run for SO long at the end with things falling in her path. I feel like it beautifully expressed that even when you DO decide to confront your grief/trauma/depression, that's only the start. You have to commit. You have to constantly decide to move forward, legs chugging, despite things falling around you trying to throw you off your feat. It's a decision you have to commit to. The metaphors of mental struggles and coping with trauma this season have been amazing. That's what makes Stranger Things such a great show. It's not just a show about killing the new monster of the season. It's about learning to deal with grief, sadness, depression, loss of innocence, etc. Such a beautiful scene and Sadie KILLED IT. Even my Husband cried and he doesn't even like Max's character that much.

I sobbed during max's scene when I first watched the episode but then seeing your reaction sent me into a whole different level of emotional breakdowns. I am so sorry you are going through this and my heart goes out to you and I wish I could just give you a hug! I love how 'Dear Billy' can be used as a metaphor for mental health when dealing with grieving or depression because even though we might not have Vecna trying to kill us, we all have our demons that we are battling. Sadie Sink definitely deserves an Oscar, Emmy, or hell, give her a Nobel Prize for her performance because it is transcendent. When she read the letter about blaming herself it hit me right in the heart because I know that feeling all too well!! (ayyyy, see what I did there???)

To me that moment with Max is so much more than her just beating Vecna. Idk if this is what others thought, but to me, it's her taking back her life, her saying she can live now and her over powering the mental illness that had been plaguing her for so long since Billy's death :(
As someone with chronic depression, I related so much to Max. In time I learned to deal with my depression, even if it's there, I can control my thoughts and actions more. And Max sees that too :)

Everyone Vecna comes after he haunts them but it is different triggers for each person. Chrissy had an eating disorder ( purging ).... when Chrissy was being haunted in the girls restroom she heard her mother's voice tell her that she was a "fat pig". I will not spoil what the guy on the basket ball teams issue is but it is reveled later in season 4 . Vecna tunes into what ever someone struggles through .
The idea of special merch is a great idea .

Fun fact:to go along with the metaphor for Mental illness,that song by Kate Bush is about her expressing how she’d wish her partner could experience a day through her eyes and feel everything the way she does and she’d make a deal with god to do it
Just like Max wishes she could even though she doesn’t even say it…yeah when they picked that song I was like “EMOTIONAL DAMAGE”

All that I am going to say is- thank you, Ashley for blessing us with a video that is over an hour long. Literally, made my day. Love you so much! Also, THAT scene in episode 4 got me crying for literally an hour afterwards. Completely agree with everything you said + Sadie's performance was on such a high level that it blew me away. I agree what you said about the scene with Max representing depression. These past few years have been beating my ass and that episode had me crying too. Yes, we all ugly cried with episode 4... I love the depression representation there, but for me the most significant part was her fighting off Vecna. It shows you that your friends and love ones can show you the door, but you are the one that has to give your last bit of energy to cross that portal. And you will fall because it wont let you go that easyly, but you have to get back up and keep going. That scene Is EVERYTHING, because it shows all this and her will to live. Best episode in the entire serie.

The dear billy reaction was the best reaction I seen of this so far! Genuine all the way. I have bipolar disorder so depression was a shadow I always had to combat with humor or anger, which is why I became a comic but, the part you said ‘ this is such a good metaphor for depression’ it took me a few minutes to process how strong we all are when we realize overcoming this life long dark cloud is gonna take a lot more than simple logic, and makes me appreciate Max’s character a lot more than I ever have. She’s just as relatable as the other characters in many ways. This scene is beyond amazing thanks to the duffer brothers. Love ya vids especially when you did one on volume 2 of stranger things

friends grow apart some times but the way to stay in contact is to reach out as much as you receive. And like, if you are constantly reaching out and starting, doesn't seem fair.
That was one of the bumps that I hit with my best friend. i constantly felt like I was the one reaching out and talking and they did nothing to try and stay in contact with me. but I think we're good for now so we'll see how it goes.

I don't usually cry when I watch tv shows but bah gawd, ep. 4 hits me in the feels too and for a number of very personal reasons! The part where Max is reading her letter to Billy made me tear up because it reminds me of my own relationship with my older sister (and half brother who passed away). And then they gotta play Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God) which is such a powerful song about a woman who wants to switch bodies with her male partner so they can better understand each other. You don't even have to relate to the relationship aspect of it to understand what it's like to want to switch places with someone. I sure do, because I'm a trans guy and never felt like I was born in the right body. Gosh, I could go on about this episode but I'll cut it short for all of our sakes! lol

The crying emotion you had is meant for everyone to have,
I direct and write shorts like this and i've had a scene like this on the back way before this
You would have had this response without being able to relate, as I and many others unanimously did.
So they used a very empowering trick to trigger the audience, Showing shame, trouble, sadness, hopelessness, than
the background song with the images of triumph , love and friendship, that inverse hit you in the face giveing us good whiplash, no time to think just boom release. of emotions, you feel the song makes you strong with max, she is fighting evil with good memories, she is winnning then it is expressed OUTWARD in the physical with her running, Again while song is playing huge part, and BOOM you get the catharsis release of yes!!!! and calm. Now you have the audience feel like hey won along with max, and they beat there demons as well along side her, seeing someone else win this way.. BOOM HAPPY TRIGGER.
Remember.. TV is programming lol it's there job to program things into us with emotion and story, Thus they call tv shows programs lol
