From those robes to feel the cold
Undressing the blessings
Feels like my afterlife, my afterlife
I go on
Yet on that night I went down with the lights
Somehow, over and over
They carried me out when the lights went out
Over, I'm over
I wanted to keep you
But I was told you'd grown too old
For someone who stayed young by bleeding light
My afterlife, is black and cold
I go on
Yet on that night I went down with the lights
Somehow, over and over
I go on
They carried me out when the lights went out
Over, I'm over
I go on
Yet on that night I went down with the lights
Somehow, over and over
I go on
They carried me out when the lights went out
Over, I'm over
The lyrics to AFI's "Dark Snow" convey a sense of lost love and failed hope, as the singer reflects on the end of a relationship that was once vibrant and passionate. The first verse uses powerful imagery to describe this lost love - the singer wishes to "take" their partner from their current life and "feel the cold" with them, a metaphor for experiencing darkness and loneliness together. The phrase "undressing the blessings" suggests that the partnership was once fulfilling and enriching, but has now been stripped of its joy and positive effects. The line "my afterlife" implies that this relationship was so significant that it feels like a part of the singer's identity or essence, and its end has left them feeling hollow or incomplete.
In the second verse, the singer expresses regret over losing their partner, but acknowledges that they were told the relationship was unsustainable due to their partner growing too old. This phrase likely has multiple meanings - it could refer to the partner growing out of the singer's level of emotional intensity, or it could be a metaphor for the inevitability of change and aging. The phrase "stayed young by bleeding light" suggests that the partner may have been an artist or creative type who remained youthful by channeling their energy into their craft. The final line, "my afterlife is black and cold," highlights the sense of despair and emptiness that the singer feels after losing this important relationship.
Overall, "Dark Snow" is a poignant and evocative exploration of the pain of losing someone you love. The vivid imagery and introspective tone make it a powerful track that speaks to anyone who has experienced a similarly devastating loss.
