Stepping Stone
ANT & DEC A.K.A. PJ & Duncan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm not your stepping stone!

Trying to make your mark in society,
You're using all the tricks that you used on me,
You're reading all them high fashion magazines,
The clothes you're wearing girl are causing public scenes!

I'm not your stepping stone!
Not your stepping stone!
I'm not your stepping stone!
Not your stepping stone!

When I first met you girl you didn't have no shoes,
But now you're walking round like front page news,
You've been awful careful 'bout the friends you choose,
But you won't find my name in your book of who's who!

I'm not your stepping stone!
Not your stepping stone!
I'm not your stepping stone!
Not your stepping stone!

Not your stepping stone,
You drive me round the bend.
There's nothing I can do,
You're using all my friends.
You lie and cheat, decieve,
Hurt me through and through.
Can't take this any more,
Now I'm stepping on you, singing...

I'm not your stepping stone!
Not your stepping stone!
I'm not your stepping stone!
Not your stepping stone!

I'm not your stepping stone!
Not your stepping stone!

I'm not your stepping stone!
Not your stepping stone!

Overall Meaning

The song Stepping Stone by ANT & DEC A.K.A. PJ & Duncan is a confrontational and rebellious tune that is laden with lyrics about standing up for oneself and not being taken advantage of. The song starts off by proclaiming that the singer is not going to be used as a tool or stepping stone for someone else's success. The first verse of the song talks about how people try to make their mark in society using all the tricks they used on the singer, who has clearly caught on to their game. The bridge explains how the girl the singer was with before had no fashion sense but now that she has seen the light, she has become a public spectacle. The chorus repeats the phrase "I'm not your stepping stone" multiple times, signifying the singer's desire to not be used by anyone, no matter how impressive their status might be.

The song serves as a form of empowerment for people, telling them to stand up to those who seek to use them and turn them into stepping stones for their own gain. The lyrics are very relatable and speak to a lot of people who have found themselves in a similar situation, where someone they loved seemed to be using them for personal gain. The song is a great example of how music can be used to express one's emotions and help others who may be going through a similar situation.
