I was only thirteen when Daddy died
At a young age of thirteen, my father passed away.

Mama started drinking, and my brother just quit trying
My mother resorted to alcoholism while my brother lost hope and gave up trying.

I'm still bouncing back, Heaven only knows
Despite the hardships, I am still working on recovering and only God knows how strong I've been.

How I came out like a rose
I emerged successful and unharmed, just like a rose that grows through thorns.

Ran off with what's his name when I turned eighteen
When I was eighteen, I eloped with someone whose name I no longer remember.

He got me out of North Dakota, but it did not change a thing
The person took me away from my hometown but it didn't make any significant difference.

I left it in the yard all covered up with snow
I left behind a part of my past, buried and forgotten in the snow-covered yard.

And I came out like a rose
Despite the flaws and failures, I still emerged as a success.

Sitting in this diner with a coffee in my hand
Presently, I am sitting alone in a diner, holding a cup of coffee.

Waiting on a bus to some promised land
Waiting to board a bus that would take me to a better future.

I got a one way ticket as far as it goes
I bought a one way ticket to the farthest place possible, without any plans of coming back.

So I'm headed south to anywhere that ain't so damn cold
I am moving to a warmer place in the south, leaving behind the coldness of my past.

Where I can warm my heart and shake the chill from my bones
Hoping to find a place that can warm my heart and help me forget the cold and dark memories of my past.

It took awhile to get here, it's been a long, hard road
The journey to this point has been a rough and painful one, taking a while to traverse.

And I came out like a rose
But despite all the hardships, I still emerged victorious and successful, like a blooming rose.
