@Geographics The penguin you mentioned was actually 6'8. It was found in 2020, a year after this broadcast (and the same time when the world went to Hell). Antarctica was never devoid of life. Penguins had evolved to its current sizes. They are the last remnants of ancient Antarctica.

Shackleton’s trek was remarkable. At one point, they decided to make a sled out of rope. A storm was approaching and their choices were to walk down the mountain, get caught in the storm and freeze to death, or risk a cliff sledding down. To move slow was guaranteed death so they rode the sled and made it safely.

I've been there! I spent just over two months there at Rothera Research Station. The first week or two was pretty exciting, then I settled into just working and participating in the research we were doing. But by about the 6th week of being there, I was going a bit mental because of the lack of anything green. I did enjoy the social aspect of eating/playing/etc together at Bransfield House with everyone. But if I'm honest, I'm in no rush to return. I am grateful for my experience there, but I learned I need at least a modicum of green and growing things in my life. I also like a Day/Night cycle and while I was there the sun never set and that took getting used to.

@Virginia Tyree I believe the constant daylight is easier to adjust to than the winter's constant night. But I can tell you that a lot of (if not all of) the room you're assigned to for sleeping have the light blocked out as best they can to help you get to sleep. You can of course remove this but I don't think I ever bothered to do that.

The channel usually picks a manmade place as small as Stonehenge or no larger than a city and gives you the history. So the human biography of a place. He doesn't cover natural history. The approach makes more sense if you watch other videos which I'm sure you did long ago so I guess I just wasted both of our time by writing this.

The Canadian Far Norrh while vast and empty barely has the resources to support to sparse population of indigenous first nations,so remote that even when the NW passage is ice free there isn't rescue services of any timely reliability meaning no insurers will underwrite voyages of anything but the supply ships for the arctic bases, as any trouble could be a potential environmental disaster and even something minor needing repaired can lead to an all hands lost event really easy...You can however sail a private yacht through but the proc3ss I am sure is costly as Canada considers it territorial waters even though they don't have the abili5y to patrol it you must abide by Canadian vessel laws which even VHF radio requires a special license.

My great grandfather went on the Mawson expedition (Australasian Antarctic Expedition in 1911-1913) as a biologist before recommencing medical studies in Sydney. And yeah, like the people mentioned here then got sent to WWI. To be honest I'm a bit surprised that the Mawson Expedition wasn't even mentioned in the video, as it made a lot of scientific discoveries and the expedition laid the groundwork for Australia's later territorial claims in Antarctica. Mawson got a knighthood for it, among other awards. It's actually even mentioned by name in 'At the Mountains of Madness' by Lovecraft. On a slightly downbeat note one of the party developed schizophrenia while there over Winter, and they had a job controlling him. If you read some of Mawson's diary entries they genuinely sound like something out of Lovecraft.
But still, I really should know more about the continent and its history. Thank you for the video.

Douglas Mawson himself is my personal #1 on "HOW THE F DID HE SURVIVE?!?!?!?" stories. And considering how many survival stories came out of the Antarctic, that's not an easy position to top. (The Far Eastern Party as part of that expedition, for reference. He was the only living thing to survive, no other people and not even one sled dog made it...)

I'm actually reading "Alone on the Ice" about Mawson and the AAE right now. I am far more in awe of Mawson and his crew because Mawson went for the science and sake of discovery for its own sake instead of the race for the poles that seemed to be everyone else's priority. I am in awe of Mawson and will deff be reading more about him.

It seems you forgot to mention one of major factor's that doomed Scott's party. Not only were there hundreds of miles of barren to cross in the middle of an Antarctic winter, but the south pole itself sits at an elevation of nearly 10,000 feet. A small factor, maybe, but one that further compounds an already hopeless situation.

Two years late to the party but thank you for this. Being a fan of the Arctic and Antarctica I found this immensely enjoyable. Antarctica really even now has a mystery to it and a spookiness in its desolation. Hearing about the events leading up to the eventual expeditions was quite an interesting learn. What Simon left out was the voyage of the French explorer, Captain Kerguelen, after whom the Kerguelen Islands were named, since he was their discoverer. He also was probably the first to sight Antarctica's shore. Captain Cook knew about Kerguelen's voyage and was trying to follow his course when he himself came close to Antarctica and also located the Kerguelen Islands, thus confirming their existence. The voyages of these men are quite fascinating to read about, as is that of Abel Tasman of the Netherlands, who encountered New Zealand and Australia.

This was really, really interesting and well done. I liked how you covered the formation of Antarctica and made it come full circle with the explanation about how rocks collected by the Terra Nova expedition helped clarify that geological history. It's interesting you mentioned about dogs on both expeditions. Part of Mr. Amundsen's success was using sled dogs to haul the loads. The men did find it hard to kill and eat dogs, but they also had treated the dogs very well up to the end compared to how sled dogs were usually treated in the Arctic. Captain Scott's expedition had sled dogs, but they also used Manchurian ponies (probably Yakut ponies from Siberia). Scott felt the ponies would be more dependable than dogs so he relied on them. Yakuts are very good in harsh winter conditions, but the particular horses purchased were not in good condition, especially for Antarctica. None of the ponies survived and the British team had to rely more on hauling sledges with manpower, which was very exhausting. Author Iain Lawrence wrote a novel for pre-teens called "The Winter Pony" that is about the horses on the Terra Nova expedition. In the style of Black Beauty, it is told from the point of view of one of the ponies. It's beautifully written and sad but worth a read.

Well done. A number of years ago my brother-in-law Charles Rentmeesters spent a good deal of time working on the Ice Cube Neutrino Detector Project, hundreds of detectors suspended below the ice in a giant grid.

He developed and maintained the drilling software that made the project possible and viable. What an exciting time!

Excellent as always. My only quibble is that whether or not Antarctica is "devoid ... of permanent settlement" is a matter of definition. Two of the permanent bases - Argentina's Esperanza Base and Chile's Villa Las Estrellas, both on the Antarctic Peninsula - have permanent civilian populations, including children; both bases have their own schools, and Esperanza even hosts the world's southernmost Scout Troop.

Amundsen’s expedition was originally designed for the Arctic. But after finding out that he’d been beaten to reaching the North Pole first by Robert Peary, he decided to redesign his expedition to go to Antarctica. But he didn’t tell any of the other expedition members or any of his backers because he feared that they would attempt to interfere and change his plans.

Fun fact: it's become an annual tradition for the winter-over crew at the South Pole's Amundsen-Scott station to watch "The Thing From Another World", John Carpenter's "The Thing", and the 2011 film "The Thing" back-to-back right after the last flight has left for the winter.

The Madero docks in Buenos Aires houses the 140 year old museum ship ARA Uruguay which was the main neutral Antarctic expedition rescue ship for most of these epic attempts on the continent. It was in regular service up until the late 1920's and is now a museum with some amazing exhibits and photos of its time in the southern oceans including its time as a support ship to the French expeditions as well as its rescue of the Swedish South Pole attempts.

I spent two winters and a summer in McMurdo. Of all the places I have been, it has the most unique beauty. I even met my wife there. I know you are limited on time, but you made Shackleton's trip look small. You failed to mention it that the him and the crew of 27 men were stranded on the ice for almost three years. You also did not include the fact that Shackleton did not lose one single man. There is a reason why they say, " If you want to conduct science experiments in Antartica select Scott. If you want to achieve you goal no matter what the risk pick Amundsen. If things go extremely wrong and it looks like there is no hope, pick Shackleton."

I was 8 during the IGY. It was a huge deal, one that I learned about and never forgot.

No mention of the Australian Sir Douglas Mawson. Yet another heroic explorer. His book is 'The Home of the Blizzard Being the Story of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914'. A decent book about his exploits is 'Mawson's Will.' His too is a harrowing tale of survival.

You guys should look into making a video about The Barren (empty) Quarter. It's the largest desert in the world and the absolute prototypical desert with its large sand dunes, some the size of mountains, various caves, sand of course and so on.

Failing that, The Sahara would also make an interesting video. It sort of ties in with this one because The Sahara was lush and green about 10,000 years ago. And before that, it was under water. We know it was underwater because fossils of whales have been found there.

It turned cold when it seperated from Australia and the ocean no longer travelled into the tropics to warm up but turned into the southern ocean, just circling around the pole, therefore chilling the ocean right down.

Wish you had mentioned the HP Lovecraft connection along with the Poe story.
Another point is the experience gained in Antarctica that applies to space. The remoteness, cold, harsh conditions, lack of food, diffiulty of travel is all related to probes and manned spacetravel to the moon and other planets.

Ice mast high came floating by as green as emerald. I was given the book when I was a kid and still have it. I've always had a fascination with Antarctica. If I could go anywhere in the world, but it could only be 1 place, it would be Antarctica. I don't want to go as a tourist, but as a student on a research team to study the geology and wild life. Would also like to do a lot of photography. I WISH. "And if wishes were horses, then beggars would ride 😑"

maybe not a suggestion for THIS channel but i’d love to hear another group’s take on the mawson expedition - the other group going for the south pole at the same time as scott and amundsen and iirc mawson was off with shackleton previously ! the casting lots podcast (very highly recommended) covered it generally with more regards towards the rumours of cannibalism around it (casting lots is solely about survival cannibalism) but a broader look would be great !

You should cover the discovery of the isolated body of water inside Antarctica that's separated from the oceans and we've recently dove submersibles into the water under the ice and it's full of unique life and highly oxygenated water with creatures larger than most places because of the high oxygen levels.

I watched 'The Last Place on Earth' TV series back in the 1980's. I didn't know much about the expeditions and was quite the Anglophile. It was life altering to see Scott's poor planning, and focus on form and class versus Amundsen, who spent time learning from the native people how to survive in such an inhospitable place and was more realistic about the trials of such an expedition. The icing on the cake was seeing Amundsen & his men glide back on skis from the Pole to their camp, sails on their sleds like Viking ships, smoking celebratory cigars. Damn. (you can find the show on YT) Decades later, I became friends with a Norwegian and finally met someone who was also excited by the Norwegian contribution to exploration.

That is a very good miniseries, and you have excellent comments. The 1979 book "The Last Place on Earth" is based on, "Scott and Amundsen" by Roland Hunt, was groundbreaking in changing the perception about Scott's leadership and in showing how Amundsen was better equipped for the journey. That became the dominant view for a while-- I grew up with the view that Captain Scott was a heroic bumbler and not a good planner and the expedition was not a success. There was a trend in the 1980s of debunking former heroes, especially in the UK. I'm glad in the 100th year anniversary of the expeditions that some good books have been written that point out the positives and negatives of both expeditions. For example, the Terra Nova expedition produced excellent scientific data which was one of its main purposes, and there were outstanding crew members whose scientific and exploration accomplishments should be remembered. Like you, I really have a lot of respect for Mr. Amundsen's planning. You mentioned his use of native techniques, but also his more practical and egalitarian approach to organizing his team played a big part, as did the way he laid in food and fuel cache depots and using dogs rather than men or horses to pull the sledges. Even the meals the men ate at Framheim base in the weeks before they departed may have helped their bodies build up important nutrients they would need that weren't in the expedition rations, and this may have been as important as their decision to eat fresh dog meat to avoid scurvey. On the negative side, Mr. Amundsen's tactic of pretending to go to the North Pole region and then changing course for the South Pole was very deceptive, especially to Mr. Nansen who loaned him his ship, "Fram", and to his investors. Even his crew did not realize the real plans until after the voyage started. I can imagine the responses if the expedition had not been successful. There is a Norwegian film that came out this year about Mr. Amundsen, and I hope I'll be able to see it someday.

I have often wondered why there hasn't been more strife over ownership of Antarctic land for the purpose of mining and drilling. So, I finally looked it up. It would cost per barrel too much for it to be profitable which makes sense. However, if technology advances to the point that it can be profitable this could create a problem.

I'm glad you didn't mention the account of Byrd claiming he saw an ancient, past civilization in Antartica, that's never been verified, it's turned into a conspiracy theory, an urban legend. I believe most of that craziness started when people thought they saw something unnatural on some of the numerous photos taken by the Byrd expedition as they flew over the pole. I believe those photos are still online..

The Scott and Edmonson expeditions mentioned being in the winter months...of the Northern Hemisphere. It was actually in the summer for the Southern Hemisphere.

The men of Shackleton's expedition may have been sent to the meatgrinder of WWI, but Shackleton was sent to North Russia as an expert to teach the British troops there how to survive, plan and eventually fight in brutal winter conditions. He also designed some special gear foe the army there. So, I guess I'm saying the meatgrinder put him to a good use?

Surrounding the North Pole is a round frozen ocean ringed by land. Around the South Pole is a round frozen continent surrounded by ocean. This is exceptionally fair (in a world where life in general is not fair). I'm sure the ancient Greeks would appreciate this.

We have a museum in Christchurch, New Zealand, which features the Scott and Shackleton expeditions with assorted items of historical interest from their expeditions. Their expeditions provisioned there and rested up before sailing further south. Not sure where Amundsen provisioned.

When Antarctica was part of the mega continent, it rotated the Earth at the equator. A huge weight on a spinning globe in space. With the breakup, it wound up at the south pole. There were never tropical forests at the southern pole of the earth.

There's actually a lot of new evidence that suggests Antarctica had tropical climates as late as 30,000 years ago, there are maps from the 11th century that show Antarctica accurately mapped with no ice sheet, flowing rivers and large lakes as it looks under the mile of ice. The enormous climatic changes that happened at the end of the younger dryers period marking the end of the ice age could have been a lot more drastic than we've been led to believe.

Well, there are plants. In most of the coast, it's just microscopic lichen and maybe some sort of miserable moss, but the Antarctic Peninsula has some grass and flower patches, especially near penguin and bird shit.

It should also be noted, from modern analysis of Scott's notes on sun observations, that he never actually located the South Pole. He was confused by Amundsen's radial flag lines.

Lol, don't say that. While the ability to locate things at the time was limited, they could have found things then too. They did manage to find Amundsen's marker without realising it (though that one was recent,) and they did find Scott's final tent. Building an igloo marker for science would likely have been easy if they truly needed to find things. Sad they didn't do it. And our ability to find things has only increased since.

An excellent video, neé brilliant video, Simon's ability continues to improve making for a narrative that is music to the ear. While the person who writes that script is very important and I dare say talented... The reader of that script can make or break it, just think back to George W. Bush trying to read the teleprompter, it made your ears hurt. Indeed the speaking of an author's written work is often given the term "actor". Awards like the Oscar, or the Tony are highly sought after, being the pennicle of the Actor's craft. Thank you so much Mr. Whistler. Maybe you will start a channel where you read really good poetry or prose that is recognized as truly superlative.

I love Antarctica it's so fascinating. I believe that the modern deadly viruses are the result of climate change melting the ice and releasing ancient viruses. No one should feel like they own any portion of Earth. There is so much preserved ancient species of animals and plants there that will be so fascinating to discover.

There are actually some animals in Antarctica but on the northernmost barely wormed areas. There is a lot of biodiversity in the oceans of Antarctica though.

Although Scott's often lauded as a hero, he was an absolutely horrible leader. Being British through and through, he didn't take suggestions from those below him in rank, nor did he think he could possibly be wrong about anything. Amundsen was not much less of a hardass when it came to giving orders, but he at least understood the landscape he was traversing, unlike Scott who initially thought to bring horses as pack animals to the south pole, because he believed dogs were beneath his dignity. Unsurprisingly, the horses all died, some of them before the expedition got started, or even reached Antarctica.

I took a class in leadership (as part of my bachelor in Economy), and Scott was used as an example of how not to do it unless you want to fail miserably.

I spent 13 month in 2010/2011 at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, it was one of the best times I had. But well, I did not attend Yoga classes as those started around 4:30 and I deemed that too early. Actually I was quite surprised about what stuff was available down there, about almost everything apart from fresh food.
I had a commute of about a mile from the station to my experiment and I was surprised how hard that can by in antarctic winter. I could not imagine how hard it must have been for Amundsen and Scott even if the went there in summer, but they did not have the clothing I had. I it must have been very unpleasant to stay outside with the gear they had.

In the UK they are heroes. Was it clear in the video that the one Captain Oates knew he was slowing them down so walked out to die to give them a chance. Every schoolboy used to learn the "I am just going outside and may be some time" quote. To teach us we must be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for country and that's the British way. 'Stiff upper lip,' shuffle off and die without a fuss.

His diary has been published as “Scott’s last expedition”, it’s a bone chilling and fascinating read. For example the temperature swings in 1912 could be from -20 to +3C in 24 hours. But most fascinating is on the way back they knew pretty clear none of them would make it alive, still they rode on because what else could they do?

You overlooked Byrd's remarkable work there. I highly recommend the autobiographical account, "Alone" by Adm. Byrd about how he survived living through the winter at over 80 degrees south, and how he barely got out alive.

While you mention the pilot that flew over the pole to drop a flag on it, you never said anything about who first actually landed on (or very near) the pole. The advent of planes that could re-supply expeditions and scientific outposts must have changed everything. Building materials for sturdier and warmth-containing structures comes to mind in particular, but also foodstuffs and scientific equipment.

Well there's a possibility that the Spaniards had accidentally visited the Antarctica (at least its outlying islands) since one of the warships, San Telmo, was en route to Ecuador to quell the war of independence there but it went out of route and beached in the Livington Island just off the coast of Antarctica
