It began in 2001 as a collaborative effort between Nina Persson (of The Cardigans) and Swedish singer, guitarist and songwriter Niclas Frisk (of Atomic Swing). The self-titled debut album A Camp was released later that year.
Persson and Frisk had recorded a collection of songs in 1998, but the project was suspended while they attended to other matters, including Persson's move to New York City with future-husband and fellow rocker Nathan Larson, an american film composer who had known some modest success in the 90s with his band Shudder To Think.
A second batch of recordings for the first A Camp record took place in Woodstock, New York, at the now-dufunct Bearsville studio. Work took place in a barn. Larson played bass. Kevin March (Dambuilders/ Shudder To Think/Guided By Voices) played drums.
The resultant album was released in 2001 in Europe, where it was a considerable success, and a significant hit in Scandinavia. The band toured extensively on the strength of the single I Can Buy You: the touring band included members of Soundtrack Of Our Lives as well as the above mentioned studio players. The album was awarded four Swedish Grammies.
In late 2007, NYC recording sessions included Joan Wasser, Nikolai Dunger, James Iha. The second album, Colonia, was released in January 2009.
A three-track EP named Covers, featuring interpretations of Pink Floyd's "Us And Them", David Bowie's "Boys Keep Swinging" and Grace Jones' "I've Done it Again", was released digitally in the United States on 9 June 2009 and in Europe on 16 June 2009.
Persson has continued to record and perform as a solo artist, and reunite with The Cardigans for occasional tours. There are not known to be any plans for further A Camp recordings.
Here Are Many Wild Animals
A Camp Lyrics

A map of the continents waiting to sink
We're an army in training, me and my band
Making camp in the evenings, grazing the land
We're never alone here
There is lots of unknown here in the brush
Here are many wild animals
We follow the highway through the forest of sparks
They grouped us in twos when we boarded the ark
Shipped off to a city stripped of our tongues
Now we live in a playground eating our young
We're never alone here, no
There's lots of unknown here in the crowd
Here are many wild animals
They're dropping the bomb!
They're dropping the bomb!
Like in the beginning
The number is three
It's a small party of roaches, scorpions and me
Forever alone here
There's lots of unknown here in the glow
Here are many wild animals
Come little kitty
Come little elephant
Come, come hither
Be with your mama
Come little bastard
Come little millionaire
Come, come faster
This is America
Come little rodent
Come little carnivore
Eat your dinner
The lyrics to A Camp's song Here Are Many Wild Animals can be interpreted in different ways, but one possible explanation is that it talks about a journey through a wilderness that is both natural and artificial. The pink trace on the map may represent the planned path, but also the fragility of the ecosystem that is disrupted by human activity. The band is described as an "army in training", suggesting a readiness to face challenges and a commitment to survival. The image of grazing the land implies a certain harmony with nature, but also a potential danger of being attacked by wild animals.
The theme of being alone and facing the unknown is repeated throughout the song, creating a sense of uncertainty and vulnerability. The forest of sparks may symbolize a dazzling but dangerous environment, where the travelers are paired off and confined to a limited space. The loss of language and culture in the city may be a metaphor for the loss of identity and freedom in a conformist society. The image of eating their young suggests a bleak outlook on the future, where the strong prey on the weak and survival becomes a matter of instinct.
The chorus of the song, which repeats the line "here are many wild animals", can be seen as both a warning and an invitation. The wild animals may represent real or imaginary threats, but also a source of wonder and inspiration. The dropping of the bomb may signal a catastrophic event or a cathartic release, depending on the interpretation. The party of roaches, scorpions, and the singer himself may be an ironic comment on the human condition, where the boundaries between species and social classes blur.
Overall, the lyrics to Here Are Many Wild Animals express a sense of adventure, danger, and diversity, with a hint of irony and despair. The song invites the listener to join the band on their journey and face the challenges of an unpredictable world.
