Past Your Frame
A Drop in the Gray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A Pictures In The Light
And I’ll See you Down
I Trust Your Heart
And I Trust Your Heart

But When I Sit Alone These Days
Suffering Fools Come Easily
Your Face, Your Lips, Your Smile
I Can’t Get Past Your Frame

I’ll Shoot You Down
Till You Come Back Up

You Go Your Way
And I’ll Go Your Way

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Past Your Frame" by A Drop in the Gray express a sense of longing for someone that the singer cannot be with. The opening lines allude to the idea of seeing someone in a new light, which could imply a shift in perspective in the relationship. However, despite this newfound understanding, the singer still feels trapped by their own emotions. They trust the other person's heart, but they cannot move past the image of them that they hold in their mind.

The second stanza deepens this feeling of stuckness. The singer describes suffering fools easily, suggesting a lack of patience or tolerance with others, but then immediately pivots to describing their fixation on the other person's face, lips, and smile. The repetition of "I can't get past your frame" drives home the idea of being trapped mentally or emotionally. The final lines hint at a sense of trying to push the other person away, perhaps as a form of protection, but also a desire to follow them even when they go their separate ways.

Overall, the song explores the complexities of feeling deeply for someone and not being able to act on those feelings. Despite trusting the other person's motives, the singer cannot shake their own emotional grip on the relationship.

Discovered A Drop in the Gray listening to WHFS Annapolis, probably in 1983-1984. Most of the tracks on the LP "Certain Sculptures" are amazing.
