No, you dont need to identify them, even though it would help prove it.
All you need to see is how innocent their "3 worst faults" are.
Unless they believe that a fault like "Hatred" is a virtue (maybe Hitler would have answered it honestly?)
You'll hardly find anyone at all who can admit to themselves that they have any of the worst traits.
A large portion-~~possibly most-~~ will have those traits but are either in denial , call it something different, or hide it because they think its justified.

You'll almost never find anyone who will genuinely know or admit those things. Therefore almost no self awareness.

Ask anyone to write down their 3 biggest faults (in private) and they,ll at worst write "anger problems, procrastination, impatience , etc etc. (all very harmless)
They,ll never write hatred, spite, jealousy, greed etc etc.

@OP First you need to identify someone with those attributes. Hatred, Spite, Jelousy, Greed stems from Self Loathing. When you love yourself, you are able to love others, but not before. One of the great tools the director used to trick the audience was in casting Bruce Willis. He was known for playing "Very Alive" or "larger than life", proactive characters in his movies. In fact the most "alive" and unburdened character in the Sixth Sense is his character. Everyone else seems to carry unmanageable burdens around with them. So it throws us off when we realize that Malcolm is in fact, dead.

The genius of this line is that it can mean what you're saying, but it can also mean that Cole is now better and therefore doesn't need further therapy sessions. Both interpretations are true at the same time and so the mystery is sustained. We only see what we want to see. We (the audience) WANT Malcolm to be alive, so that's what we see. This film is a perfect essay on the deadness of voyeur (i.e. the audience). We sit there, in the dark, apart from the living world (i.e. what's going on on screen). Of course it's the king of all ironies. We in the audience ARE alive, and the images on the screen are not. The message here is that we (the audience) need to take action in life and not just sit around like dead people...

Showed this Movie to my son on the autism spectrum….after having watched it previously myself and only got the twist right at the end. My son said Malcolm was dead as soon as Cole saw him….made him sit through the whole movie to prove him right. Certain people on this planet have a different perspective on life and pick up on things us “normals” block out

I am also autistic and I see much in movies such as this that others fail to see. For example, in the movie V for Vendetta, the "egg in a basket" serves as a metaphor for a "womb" which can be expressed in Latin as a "matrix" and the message sent is that V and Deitrich "fed" the Matrix to Evey by showing her their collections of art and literature. I further recognize that the poster of this video alludes to Plato's Allegory of the Cave, which if you really think about it, is also a "shadow" on the wall because it is a distorted view of reality. This is all part of an allegoric code that has been employed for more than two thousand years by numerous writers and artists which my autism has enabled me to see and decipher. M Night Shyamalan used this allegory in nearly all of his movies. For example, "water" is a metaphor for "writings" and it served as a form of "kryptonite" in the movies "Signs" and "Unbreakable" but it was also the source of "life" for the character of "Story" in the "Lady in the Water", however, this is not a "contradiction" because "females" represent allegoric "covers" that hide or "kill" "males" by sending them to the "underworld".

If you don't pick up on that right after he's shot, you're just not going to until the reveal. I felt like I should have known from the beginning but MNS does a pretty good job of making you forget about the shooting rather quick. Until it's revealed you really do just assume Malcolm is interacting with all these people. I mean you even sort of assume the mom hired Malcolm and that's why he's there in the first place.

He even has a white streak in his hair, which they say happens when someone suffers significant trauma. 😕 Also, when Vincent Grey (the guy who shoots him) is stripped down to his underwear, you can see he is horribly scratched up… later, we see how vicious the dead can be to Cole, and that is probably STILL what is happening to poor Vincent, even as an adult.

If I understand the character correctly, she was just recording her little show and was unaware that her mother was poisoning her. After death she understood and wanted her father to see the tape and witness the truth. Perhaps after observing her mother slowly poison her younger sister. A guest at the funeral made a reference to the sister now becoming sick too.

This remains the most overwhelming and wonderful cinema experience I've ever had. Me and my best friend both realised what was going at *exactly the same moment, when the ring drops. We both reached for and grabbed each other's hands at the precise same instant and we both gasped at the same time. Another thing I noticed years ago when I saw this, was that the sentence that Cole was saying over and over again, that Malcolm translates: 'Out of the Depths, I cry to thee O Lord'. If you keep that phrase in mind while Malcolm helps Cole you realize that Malcolm is, essentially, God's answer to Cole's prayer.

I saw sixth sense when it first came out, it's one of those films that sends a shiver down your spine when you realise that malcolm is dead, I had to replay every scene, I was convinced he was talking to his wife etc but when you watch it back you realise how cleverly it has been filmed ! ;)

The relationship between Malcolm and Cole is an interesting one: Malcolm believes he is helping Cole but in reality it's more the other way round. The word "help" is used at least three times in the film: "You can't help me" (Cole to Malcolm in Cole's house, perhaps to make Malcolm more determined). "What do you think these ghosts want?" "Just help". (Dialogue between Malcolm and Cole). NB: Malcolm needs to help Cole in order to help himself, hence at the end of the movie: "I needed to help someone" (Malcolm to Anna). After helping Cole, Malcolm's work on Earth is done.

You're right, after seeing the movie I remembered the frames that director used. Some of them are really interesting, right after the scene where Malcom listens to those tapes where he comes to know that the Visuals that Vincent talked about were real. He rushes to the Church. It's like he wants the information or answers to the mystery. And we see, Cole walking on the floor above, with confidence. Cole's shown above Malcom, bigger and important to him.

Yes, you interpreted this very well. You’re right, it was very mysterious: the evidence was given all along, and yet we didn’t see it till the end.

I love the scene where his wife picks up the check at the restaurant, while he’s reaching for it. He thinks she is ignoring him, refusing to let him pay for the dinner, refusing to look at him or speak to him, but really she just doesn’t see him.

Many people didn't understand how Malcolm knew to show up at that restaurant for their anniversary when they wouldn't have made plans to go there. He said he was late because he went to the wrong restaurant so it couldn't have been the place they went to every year for their anniversary. None of that occurred to me when I was watching it.

Your mention of the light bulb reminds me of a small detail I think I noticed. Cole has a small patch of lighter hair on the side of his head. The snapshot of Vincent shows a beam of sunlight refracting off the side of his head. As if this is how they were both "touched" with their supernatural abilities.

I couldn't believe that Malcom had survived the shooting, that massive loss of blood, but when we see him (I think it was) the next autumn, I thought, ok, that's some miracle of medical science, it's a movie, so I just go with it. The look on Malcolm's face when Cole tells him that he sees dead people was.... odd, for lack of a better word, and it was a bit of a hmmmm 🤔 moment for me, and I just continued watching the film, letting it tell its story. MNS said in the DVD extras that (I'm paraphrasing here) he was worried that that scene would give everything away, and distract people away from the story too soon. Well, it almost did for me, but not quite; it wasn't until the ring dropped that the penny dropped! I like, but also don't like, to figure out the mystery of stories before the reveal. It's fun, in a "look how smart I am" way, but it also spoils it a bit- how do I give myself a spoiler alert so that I can avoid the spoiler in my own brain? 😂

This is my favorite movie of all time and it bothers me to no end that most people couldn't get past "I see dead people" jokes. I realised that Malcolm was dead as soon as Cole says he sees dead people. I realised it most profoundly when I noticed that no-one but Cole speaks directly to him. Then go back to the beginning of the movie it becomes obvious that he never survived the gunshot wound. I don’t always get movie twists before the reveal, but I worked that one out.

Honestly I caught on to Malcolm being deceased before the reveal. It was obvious to me the Cole was the only one talking to him and his widow is obviously still mourning. The biggest surprise for me came during the funeral scene when that little girl’s father finds out how his daughter really died. I vaguely remember one of the funeral goers saying something about the other child becoming sick, so I guess Kira had a sibling. Step mom was an evil witch and that reveal was most unexpected.

I saw this in the theater. I had a strong feeling Malcolm was dead after the dinner scene with his wife. And I was totally convinced at the part where he broke the glass door of her store. The brilliance of this movie is that people tended to not give the ending away to those who hadn't seen it yet. They didn't want to spoil it for others and so many of us went back to the theater more than once to see what he had missed.

I saw this in the theater with my son who was 17 years old at the time. We LOVED it and neither of us guessed the ending until the very end. I think this was Bruce Willis's best film and a masterpiece from M. Night Shyamalan.

When I first saw the preview for this movie, I had this strange feeling that the main character Malcolm Crowe was already dead, so when I went to the movie theater to see the picture, I watched it with that perspective. It was a surreal experience to see it all get played out.

I saw this movie in the theater the day it opened. It was a first date. About 25 minutes before it was over, I figured it out and was so surprised I yelled it out loud. Thankfully there was only about 10 people there at the time. And no, we didn’t go on a second date. 🤷‍♀️ still one of my favorite movies.

MaDPuPPeT - The Sixth Sense was a good movie all the way around, but it's not like M. Night invented the twist ending.
The Usual Suspects just four years earlier had a pretty good twist, but it goes back much further than that.
Hitchcock was known for his twists.
Then there's pretty much every episode of the Twilight Zone.

Movies like "The Big Lebowski" or "Groundhog Day" actually have a lot more hidden gems and things we missed the 1st or 2nd time through. In my opinion.

Like how Bunny is painting her toenails in one of the opening scenes of the movie. Totally missed that a bunch of times. Then again I never have been sober while watching that flick.

I'll never forget, I was about 6 when I went to the movies with family to see this. We saw it twice more. When it was nominated for an Oscar, but didn't win, I remember a relative saying: "The didn't give it to the director bc he wasn't white." I've seen this movie now that I'm older and it's so brilliantly filmed. I don't understand how it didn't get the recognition it deserved.

I thought you were gonna talk about the blunt implication Cole isn't the only one who can see and hear dead people. That part is completely overlooked by most, and I think has way more interesting significance in understanding the movie than a meta-message which is actually pretty obvious, if you're used to breaking down movie meanings

When the bus went past the cemetery, Haley looked, then gasped, and pulled himself back against the seat. I suspected he saw scary ghosts and didnt want them to see him. Very good detail for his character.

I watched this with my best friend. I told her, he's dead. The look she gave me was priceless. She had already seen the movie and was totally shocked at how it ended. She used to get pissed about how I knew the endings of movies before they happened. However, it wasn't the 'symbolism' blah, blah, blah, that made me think he was dead. It was his wife. If the man you utterly adore and love more than life itself, is shot and he somehow miraculously survives, you are not going to be angry with him. You are going to have had a very real reminder of how precious life is and how you better not waste it. That is how I knew he was dead.

I loved this movie because it took me until the little boy saying, "I see dead people," to realize Malcolm was dead. I usually guess the plots of most movies very early. I remember going to see The Sting in high school, and figured out the entire plot in the first 15 minutes. When everyone else was oohing and awing the "surprise" ending, I just rolled my eyes. But the Sixth Sense was very good at keeping the secret of Malcolm's death. This is a terrific movie!

I love love love thriller/horror movies and I had kind of figured out about the plot twist but wished so so so so bad for it not to be true...I feel this movie transitioned so easily from a thriller to an emotional one.. Absolutely a classic of m night shyamalan.

I saw this back then and felt ripped off. I felt N-Night cheated. Immediately after the shooting, when it appears Malcolm survived, my immediate thought was I hope we're not being scammed and it turns out we were because the director played fast and loose with his 'rules' and 'clues'.

The light part was interesting. I never realized Cole's last name was basically seer, that was interesting. "Soul Seer" is a bit of a stretch, but I'll bite... And "Cole is in the middle of Malcolm" was a little too far.

Logos Made Flesh I think they're basically saying that one can read whatever they want into things, but that doesn't make them true (in this case, as to why a director chose the name "Malcolm"). It may have had nothing to do with "Cole", or it may have. But in all fairness, I see how you can arrive at these "clues". To dissect the name further, in French, the word for "bad" is "mal". Using your reasoning regarding "Malcolm", this would translate to "bad col(e)". Since Cole struggled terribly with his psychic abilities and felt misunderstood and "bad" for having these gifts he couldn't understand or control, it's quite possible that the director gave a character a name to "reflect" that. But there's no way to really know unless they admit to it, right? In other words, sometimes I think we can read too much into things. Great video, just the same. 😊 xx

But in this film, THE BEST performance was from Toni Collette (Cole’s mother) when Cole finally confesses his powers to her and talks about his grandma. Toni absolutely scorches the earth. One of the best scenes by an actor ever. Literally in my top 10. You can feel everything coming off of her.

The Others was great, too. Then I saw some older movies and shows from the 40s and 50s that had the same sort of theme, where the main characters come to realize they are the dead ones in the story. I think these types of stories go way back, from books.

I think the vast majority of people assumed Malcolm recovered and wasnt dead. The scenes with his wife were a little too obvious, but I think he had to throw some things in there to help the audience 'get it' when the big reveal came. Also, Malcolm is always solely interested in Cole and never so much as flinches towards the other living surroundings. What I mean is that similarly to the other ghosts in the movie its just Cole that is spoken to and sought out. You may think hes being a thorough Doctor of psychology in that way, but really its because Cole is the only living thing that can see, hear, and talk to him back. Tough movie to figure out the first time kinda like 'Fight Club.'

I personally didn’t see this twist coming, I was utterly shocked. But I know movie gurus who can tell you exactly what’s going to happen in a movie in the first 10-15 minutes. Years ago, I turned on Hand That Rocks the Cradle to watch with my younger sister. I had seen it, she had not. Within 15 minutes, she told me about 6 different things that were gonna happen. I stood up in silence, walked to the PlayStation and turned that MF off. I told her there was no point to continue watching. I hate when people spoil endings for others, so I won’t say specifically what she called out, but she called out EVERYTHING. For those who have seen it, I’m sure you can pinpoint what she called before it happened.

I like the small detail in that scene where he pulls the blanket close because it has just gotten cold. An indicator that a ghost is nearby hinting that Dr Malcolm Crowe is a ghost.

When Cole says "the dead don't know they're dead. They can't see each other" etc., it was clear to me that Malcolm was also a ghost. Up till then I was wondering why nobody had mentioned the shooter, and why his wife seemed so cold and distant, having so recently gone through such a dramatic episode with him. Of course, he's dead!

It's a great movie, but Night should've tried to avoid the revealing infodump...

Wasn't really surprised about him not knowing he is dead, there is a similar Africa tale about a man who doesn't know he was dead that then had another family, the way the story is told always give me the chill as well, this story I heard 11 years before the six sense film, also apparently it a version of this Africa ghost story that Night use for six sense.

I never saw this film for years and never knew what the twist was for it. All I knew was who is in the film, directed it, and the line “I See Dead People”. I finally saw it around 3 or 4 years ago and was blown away! I am 24 now and I have no clue how I dodged the twist for so long!

I think the less obvious twist is the fact that the patient who shoots Malcolm at the beginning of the film couls probably see dead people too. He had scratches on his arms and strands of white hair just like Cole does.

I agree that the film is meta-cinematic but I think it’s more about commenting on what audiences are willing to believe. In the first scene we believe someone can survive a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen. In the last scene (and we know it’s the last because the prior one wrapped up the plot involving Cole and his mom) we believe a broken marriage can be healed in a matter of minutes. In both cases we believe because we want to.

In my mind, I always thought another “twist”. Cole met Malcolm at the right time, saving him from becoming like Vince. Think about it, if Cole was never “treated” by Malcolm, there’s a good chance he could’ve ended up like Vince, who killed Malcolm.

i am usually the obnoxious one who can guess the ending & the murderer in the first 30 minutes of most movies. i loved this movie because it completely caught me off guard & that ahhh haaaa moment near the end was fabulously chilling. i couldnt wait to rewatch it to see all those moments that showed no one saw him but the kid (that i thought was just the directors style to keep the focus on the kid & willis.). well done. great movie.

You realize Malcom is a ghost when Cole is under the pink blanket and saying he sees dead people. He’s cold and there’s visible breath like the room is very cold. Only Cole and Malcolm are there. Malcolm is sucking the warmth out of the room and making Cole bury himself deeper under the blanket. That’s when the viewer first knows Malcolm is dead, not the ring and the flashbacks.

It's funny cause when I saw The Sixth Sense as a kid after you see Malcolm get shot and then you see the next scene that happens months later I actually asked my parents how he could have possibly survived that gunshot and then we all got a shock at the end as my parents just assumed he'd survived and recovered, I couldn't believe I came that close to figuring the twist out. And my parents told me later that when my gran finally saw the movie that she had the twist figured out right from the get go.

My friend had already seen this and had me watch it. I am that guy, who figures every thing out. And I did not realize this until I found out he was shot. My mind went right back to the scene. What I noticed upon my first viewing was Malcom wears the same clothes throughout the whole film, but I couldn't figure out why until the end. What he wears throughout the film are all the clothes he watched on the night he died. The suit, blue shirt, tie, gray sweatshirt, jacket, etc.

The one thing that bothered me about this movie is Malcom "meets" Cole's mother near the beginning, and it's implied they had an introductory conversation about Cole shortly before he comes home.

Even if they didn't talk, what transpired? How is Malcolm not weirded out by the woman not acknowledging him? How did he enter the house and make contact if he's under the belief he's meeting a new client?

And such a great film, such nimble (mis)direction, like a master magician having you look over here, thus missing entirely what's really happening (unfortunately, I haven't enjoyed any of his other movies.) The problem I have with a lot of movies like this is that their reveal isn't actually at the time of the "reveal" at the end, but is usually shown at the beginning. That always ruins the movie for me. When Bruce Willis is shot in the beginning. I thought it was strange at first that he didn't walk funny or show any level of pain from his gunshot wound. I also noticed that no one ever directly spoke to him. And when the kid explained to Bruce, "I see dead people...they don't know that they are dead"...I knew he was telling Bruce that he was one of them. I am not trying to claim that I am the smartest guy who always sees the twist coming. But I AM saying that I have seen enough movies to understand what is being presented visually. And often, the WAY a movie is filmed makes it easy to spot the twist coming from almost the beginning of the movie. I guess I have "The 7th Sense"...cause I see movies movie plot twists"

I know what you mean, but we do actually see him unable to move very quickly because of his "injury". When he chases Cole in their first scene together, he has to stop and looks pained as he clutches his stomach. It's what made me go along with the rest of the movie.

My late partner and I saw 6th Sense in the theatre. I missed every clue! At the end as his ring rolls across the floor and his wife is asleep as she breathes out cold air, I turned to Annie and asked " Did he die in the beginning? " She said yes. I often replay the ending. Classic film.
