She first gained recognition at the age of 10, when she appeared on the television show Star Search and performed in concert alongside Gladys Knight. At the age of 12, Aaliyah signed with Jive Records and her uncle Barry Hankerson's Blackground Records. She released her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number the album sold three million copies in the United States and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry.
Aaliyah worked with record producers Timbaland and Missy Elliott for her second album, One in a Million, which sold three million copies in the United States and more than eight million copies worldwide. In 2000, Aaliyah appeared in her first film, Romeo Must Die. She contributed to the film's soundtrack, which spawned the single "Try Again". The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 solely on airplay, making Aaliyah the first artist in Billboard history to achieve this goal. After completing Romeo Must Die, Aaliyah filmed her role in Queen of the Damned, and released, in 2001, her self-titled third and final studio album, which topped the Billboard 200. Unfortunately, the 22 year old singer's life was tragically cut short in a 2001 plane crash after filming her video for "Rock The Boat" in The Bahamas.
Aaliyah became famous in her own right during the mid-1990s with several hit records from the songwriting/production team of Missy Elliott and Timbaland, and their associate Steve "Static" Garrett. Notable for recording several hit singles, including "One in A Million" and "Try Again", Aaliyah has sold over 32 million records total worldwide, including posthumous releases. Two posthumous albums have been released since Haughton's death: I Care 4 U in December 2002, and Ultimate Aaliyah in April 2005, the latter of which was released as a box set that included her greatest hits and a documentary on her life. Haughton also ventured outside of music, modeling for Tommy Hilfiger and starring in two motion pictures (Romeo Must Die & Queen of The Damned) before her untimely death.

Quarter after two (flight 102), I know it's late (real late)
But I'm callin' you (callin' you)
Tryna figure if I (I) can (can) come (come) see (see) you
Can I come see you? (Mmm)
I know you're asleep (you're asleep)
But you're on my mind (my mind)
And I'm wide awake (awake)
So can you get up and get out of the bed?
'Cause I wanna see you
And I've been wonderin'
Can I come over? (Can I)
Come over (stop by)
Come over (to see you)
Come over (tonight)
Can I come over? (Can I)
Come over (get with you)
Come over (just wanna)
Come over (be with you, baby)
Can I come over? (Can I)
Come over (stop by)
Come over (to see you)
Come over (tonight)
Can I come over? (Can I)
Come over (get with you)
Come over (just wanna)
Yeah (be with you, baby)
So tell me what the deal, you're not that far
I just got my bags and I'm headed to the car
Say, "Yes or no," 'cause I'm on the road
Um, wait a minute, my battery's low
Let me, alright
Baby, I wanna come see you
Said, I really wanna come see you
Don't you worry 'bout a thing
I'm just wantin' to hold you, embrace you
I want to look at you and tell you how much I love you
I want you, I need you, I miss you
Can I come over? (Can I)
Come over (stop by)
Come over (to see you)
Come over (tonight)
Can I come over? (Can I)
Come over (get with you)
Come over (just wanna)
Come over (be with you, baby)
Can I come over? (Can I)
Come over (stop by)
Come over (to see you)
Come over (tonight)
Can I come over? (Can I)
Come over (get with you)
Come over (just wanna)
Yeah (be with you, baby)
Oh, oh
Oh, oh
Ooh, oh
Oh, ooh
Oh, oh
Oh, oh
Ooh, oh
Oh, ooh, ooh
Can I come over? (Can I)
Come on over (stop by)
Come over (to see you)
Come over (tonight)
Can I come over? (Can I)
Come over (get with you)
Come over (just wanna)
Come over (be with you, baby)
Can I come over? (Can I)
Come over (stop by)
Come over (to see you)
Come over (tonight)
Can I come over? (Can I)

In Aaliyah's song "Come Over," the singer is communicating to a lover that she has recently arrived in town and is contemplating visiting them late at night. The lyrics convey a sense of longing and desire for connection, as the singer expresses a wish to be with this person, even if it means disrupting their sleep. This request is underscored by a repeated question in the chorus, asking, "Can I come over?" The verses further emphasize this desire, with the singer describing how much this person is on their mind and how they want to hold and embrace them. Overall, the song paints a picture of vulnerability and openness, as the singer puts aside any fear of rejection or awkwardness in order to express their feelings.
