Throwing Shade
Abe Vigoda Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your heart is in heaven
The day that you die
Ultimate life
It's the white line
Signifies end of time

Death defy, bring me another
One after other
No where to tell the end of summer

Turn the night onto a tether

Can't stand the color
Bring me to life or hope for another

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Abe Vigoda's song "Throwing Shade" talks about death and the afterlife. The first line of the song "Your heart is in heaven" suggests that after we die, our hearts go to heaven. The second line "The day that you die" highlights the inevitability of death, that it is something all of us will face. The next line, "Ultimate life" implies that the afterlife is somehow better or more meaningful, which is often a belief held by people who follow religious beliefs. The line "It's the white line" could be interpreted as a reference to the tunnel of light that some people claim to see when they have a near-death experience or when they are dying. The final line, "Signifies end of time" reinforces the idea of death being permanent, the end of our time on earth.

The next verse continues with the theme of death and the afterlife. The line "Death defy, bring me another" suggests that the singer is either taunting death or is not afraid of it. The next line "One after other" implies repeated deaths, or perhaps that death is inevitable for everyone. The line "No where to tell the end of summer" is less clear, but could mean that there is no way of knowing how much time we have left in this life. The next two lines "Turn the night onto a tether, Can't stand the color" could be interpreted as the singer not wanting to face the reality of death and wanting to cling on to life. However, the final line "Bring me to life or hope for another" suggests that the singer is open to an afterlife or reincarnation.
