Counting Down The Days
Above Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been counting down the days and the nights
Since you last said that you loved me
And it's cold here in the shadows with no light
Since you last said that you loved me

I've been counting down the days and the nights
Since you last said that you loved me
And it's cold here in the shadows with no light
Since you last said that you loved me

Time is like an enemy leaving lovers by the side
The more you cling to love, the more you're gonna lose your mind
All I feel is sadness now
Taking over, taking over, taking over
All I see is black clouds of doubt
Taking over, taking over, taking over

I've been counting down the days and the nights
Since you last said that you loved me
And it's cold here in the shadows with no light
Since you last said that you loved me

Time is like an enemy leaving lovers by the side
The more you cling to love, the more you're gonna lose your mind
All I feel is sadness now
Taking over, taking over, taking over

I've been counting down the days and the nights
Since you last said that you loved me

And it's cold here in the shadows with no light
Since you last said that you loved me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Above & Beyond’s song “Counting Down The Days” depict a person who is deeply hurt and longing for love. The repetition of the phrase “I’ve been counting down the days and the nights since you last said that you loved me” creates a feeling of persistence and desperation. The singer is haunted by the memory of a lost love which they desperately seek to rekindle. The person is lamenting that it’s been too long since they’ve heard the words “I love you” from their love interest. The second stanza suggests that time is the enemy of love, and that holding onto love too hard could ultimately lead to one's mind being lost in the process. The bridge in the middle of the song repeats the lines “I’ve been counting down the days and the nights, since you last said that you loved me, and it’s cold here in the shadows with no light,” emphasizing the loneliness and longing of the singer.

I cried the first time i listened to this song. For those of us who can relate to lost love, it's a sad yet beautiful song.

@DerposaurusRex

It definitely hits home :(

I find it ironic that this song came out as I was going through pretty much the exact same series of events shown in the video. To this day this song hits me as both painful and beautiful at the same time, if thats possible . . .

I remember doing the same. It has been four years now. All of a sudden Youtube decided to play this one for me. I was living overseas, working on my internship, feeling miserable and broken yet living the time of my life. Definitely hit me hard. After discovering this song I walked home many times in the evening playing this on my ears. I think this song gave me strength in a place I used to be.

I just love A&B – haven't heard a single track by them that isn't to be appreciated for what it is.
