1.) An American black metal band with a sound comprised of both thrash and death metal. Formed in Plano, Texas in 1989, the band's name was originally "Dolmen" but this was soon changed to "Absu", drawing thematic influence from esoteric middle-eastern and Celtic mythology. They recorded four albums and an EP from 1993 to 2001. After the release of Tara in 2001 the band was put on hiatus as guitarist and bassist Equitant Ifernain and Shaftiel departed, citing musical differences and disinterest in the band, respectively.
The current line-up is:
Proscriptor McGovern - Vocals (lead), Drums (Proscriptor, ex-Melechesh, ex-Judas Iscariot)
Vis Crom - Guitars (Rumpelstiltskin Grinder, ex-Armageddon, ex-Evil Divine)
Ezezu - Vocals (backing), Bass (ex-Panzram)
In 2007, Proscriptor resurrected Absu, announcing a new line-up and a new (self-titled) album was released in 2009.

Is chained to Ninnigal
Acknowledge the prayers
Subsequent to earth
The seventh gate of Nana
'Outcry thy sin!'
While the sixth portal of Lord Mastema opens wide
Nana: God of the Moon: I convoke to thee
An abyss will seek menace towards the reign once again
Ostentation of your heart is
A heart filled with lunar parallaxes
If you look
The elders anticipate the arrival
Of the black and amoral innocents
If you look
The Celestial Pantheon will burn
Burns the prediction of persecution
The lyrics to Absu's song "The Thrice Is Greatest to Ninnigal" are full of references to the spiritual and mythological world. The song begins with the mention of Xul, a detestable force or creature, who is chained to Ninnigal. Ninnigal is a Mesopotamian goddess of the underworld, who was believed to be the sister of Inanna, the goddess of love, fertility, and war. The lyrics then go on to acknowledge prayers that follow an event on earth. The reference to the seventh gate of Nana is another mythological reference, where Nana is a god of the moon in Mesopotamian mythology.
The sixth portal of Lord Mastema opening wide is another reference to the underworld, as Mastema is a demon of the underworld. The lyrics then invoke Nana, the god of the moon, asking for his attention. The next line speaks of the regrets of the earth burning the scriptures, which could refer to the destruction of knowledge and wisdom. The abyss seeking menace towards the reign once again could refer to the resurgence of evil, destruction, or chaos.
The reference to the elders anticipating the arrival of black and amoral innocents could refer to the arrival of dark times and troubling events. The last line of the song speaks of the prediction of persecution burning, which could refer to the end of an era or the end of a cycle.
