Absynthe Minded originally formed in 1999 as a one man band. Singer/guitarist Bert Ostyn recorded the first demos solo in his bedroom in Ghent. In 2002 Ostyn recruited Renaud Ghilbert (violin, trumpet, percussion), Sergej Van Bouwel (bass, contrabass) and Jan Duthoy (Hammond, piano) to form the Absynthe Minded Quartet, shortly Absynthe Minded. The History Makes Science Fiction EP (2003) was their first release on the independent Keremos label.
One year later the band finished second the infamous Belgian rock contest Humo's Rock Rally, which gathered them a serious amount of media coverage. After the addition of drummer Jakob Nachtergaele to its line-up, Absynthe Minded released their first full length Acquired Taste later that year to much critical acclaim.
Their sophomore album New Day was released only a year later. With the succes of hit-single My Heroics, Part One, Absynthe Minded start touring Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany. They also supported dEUS on their European tour.
For the release of their next albums There Is Nothing (2007) and the self-titled Absynthe Minded (2009), the band signed with Universal.
In february 2015 Absynthe Minded announced their split, due to solo ambitions of Ostyn.
Down Deep Inside
Absynthe Minded Lyrics

I think about all I left behind one time in my life
I feel forever, whatever
You are my wonderful voyage
Your picture is a beautiful spot on my wall
I come gazing by from time to time
I haven't got the faintest idea
Yeah it feels like I'm trapped
In my own scheme
A real-time adjust
The mistakes I made
The time of my life
My child-like brain
It ain't no match...
With the love down deep inside
I am standing in the supermarket line
I think about your beautiful smile
I loved to see you do that dance time after time
I hope one day you'll do it again
Yeah it feels like I'm trapped
In my own scheme
A real-time adjust
The mistakes I made
The lyrics of Absynthe Minded's song Down Deep Inside are imbued with a wistful longing that is often associated with lost love. The song opens with a vivid image of the cold fall season sending shivers down the singer's spine, which evokes a sense of loneliness and introspection. The singer then reflects on their past and the things they've left behind, alluding to a feeling of regret and the desire to hold onto something that is forever. However, the lyrics shift in tone when the singer speaks of the person they are addressing in the song, who is described as a "wonderful voyage". This person is the one constant that brings joy and stability to the singer's life.
The second verse of the song speaks of a picture that the singer has of this person on their wall, which they look at from time to time. This image is a kind of talisman that connects the singer to the person and provides a sense of comfort in their absence. The singer admits to being trapped in their own scheme, perhaps alluding to the mistakes they made in the past that led to the current state of affairs. It is interesting to note that the singer refers to their brain as "child-like", which could suggest a sense of innocence or immaturity that led to their mistakes.
Overall, Down Deep Inside is a poignant and introspective song that speaks of the complexities of human emotion and the yearning for connection and stability.
