Dear Prudence
Across the Universe Soundtrack/Evan Rachel Wood Lyrics

Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play
Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day
The sun is up, the sky is blue
It's beautiful and so are you
Dear Prudence won't you come out to play

Dear Prudence open up your eyes
Dear Prudence see the sunny skies
The wind is low the birds will sing
That you are part of everything
Dear Prudence won't you open up your eyes?

Look around round
Look around round round
Look around

Dear Prudence let me see you smile
Dear Prudence like a little child
The clouds will be a daisy chain
So let me see you smile again
Dear Prudence won't you let me see you smile?

Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play
Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day
The sun is up, the sky is blue

It's beautiful and so are you
Dear Prudence won't you come out to play

Overall Meaning

The song “Dear Prudence” is a heartfelt plea for someone to come out and enjoy the beauty of the world. The lyrics are addressed to Prudence Farrow, the sister of Mia Farrow and a close friend of The Beatles when they were in India with Maharishi. Prudence spent many hours locked in her meditation room while the rest of the group enjoyed the sunshine and communal activities.

The lyrics urge Prudence to come out and play, to see the sunny skies and the beauty of the natural world. The song asks her to open up her eyes and remember that she is part of everything. The line “the clouds will be a daisy chain” is a beautiful metaphor, suggesting that everything is connected and interwoven. The song is a call to connect, to experience the joy and beauty of life and to share it with others.

One possible interpretation of the song is a call to Prudence to break out of her shell and leave behind her solitary meditation. It is an invitation to join the group in their exploration of the world and their enjoyment of it. The repeated emphasis on seeing and smiling suggests that the song is urging Prudence to engage with the world and to find joy in it.

This movie is such an overlooked masterpiece.

@beth.darvell

Totally! It deserves so much more love.

Yes an absolutely brilliant way to implement Beatles songs into a narrative and the cover versions are very well done... except for “Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite”... I could’ve done without that lol. The original song is great but the version in the film is... less than great. But overall, the film is very artistic and the actors/actresses do a fantastic job both acting and singing. It’s one of my favorite movies... although I’m a bit biased since the Beatles are my favorite band. But I think even a casual Beatles fan is likely to enjoy the film. A masterpiece, imo.

@adamwintz1072

Would you think it was brillant if it didn't use the music of the greatest pop band of all time?

@JAFO.

@Adam Wintz Would you think the sky as beautiful if the world wasn't a sphere?

@morganmaloney5282

@Adam Wintz I honestly didn’t even like the Beatles until I heard the arrangements from this movie, so probably.

I loved this movie. My husband and I saw it in an empty theater on a Halloween night. It was perfect.

@StarWarsFan443

@johnnolan4312

It was actually written about prudence Farrow, Mia's sister by John Lennon in India , she was meditating for a long period of time and would not leave her room
