With guitarist Ben Wise co-producing and Joey Clement on bass, their self-titled first release quickly got them signed to Fastmusic in 2004. I have a question for you and a request.

I had a Taurus super Yankee which I liked but have moved to my first Occidental belt for framing.. my question is this.. out of the two.. which do you like more as a framing belt? Taurus for the weight and size, or Occidental for the organisation of the pouches.

Also.. my request is could you do a setup video on the setup of your shoulder straps on your belt.. they are an interesting setup especially with the actual adjustment part. Mine seem to work their way loose. Not sure if I have set it up right.

Quick question. Are both the suspender set ups the same and where can I check them out? Just running a cheap model atm.

I've been using the Taurus from day one. My last one lasted just over 12 years, had it with me in Scotland, Canada, USA and Aussie. In North America they would poke a bit of shit at how small the Taurus was and that I couldn't carry as much as them....I could never understand how/why they would carry so many tools, nails, screws etc each to their own I guess.

My two cents

Taurus tool belt - set combi square at 100 - 130mm (square not 45) and it will sit in that slot fine without stabbing in the leg. I also carry a speed square.
- the two little pockets/slots that are almost too small for anything are perfect for tek screw bits
- the only fault i find is that the leather loop on the back (nail bar slot) is the best place to hang a nail gun, but can't fit both.

Also Taurus customer service is pretty good. Newish nail bag was outside of warranty and they fixed it for free, (suspender loophole broke), free same day delivery and everything. I can not recommend them enough.

$295 for the shoulder straps alone is a steep price, BUT after searching for alternative "quality" shoulder straps, there isn't really much out there that quite as good or even close. I'm starting my apprenticeship end of the month and I'm going to invest in these tools and gear because you have done a very good job reviewing these products and the value is unquestionable.

The one justification I see for Scott's is that it's never going to fall apart. Twice as expensive, at least twice the life. When your nail punch holders rip out, it's not a huge deal, but it would annoy me. But it's a pretty good sign the rest of it is going to wear through soon. One piece at a time.

Occidental sells tool sheaths you can clip or slide into any pounches. Made of hard plastic to keep them from ripping into the nylon. Great for chisels

I have a set of big bags when I'm doing house construction, but a totally different set up for film work: I have to have a screw gun or impact driver holster. I typically hate things down my back side, I'm always squatting down to do base or whatever, crawling under stages etc. But when I'm banging homes together I have nearly exactly what you pros sport- except for the suspenders [braces]. Honestly, it's been a few decades since I was on a big house crew, and was just discovering the lower back pain Mr. P mentioned- so braces would be the next purchase. If I build another big house. My big house for now is the annual Haunted House I set up for the island kids [discarded movie scenery- very scary].

I work in Auckland too and use the Occidental 9855 adjustable tool belt (lighter nylon style pouches with leather mainly on the wear points). Got it from Loven Tools a few years back. I still get grief from my colleagues (who all have the Taurus) because it's so much bigger than theirs. The leather around the top of the pouches helps keep them open to make it easier to get things in and out, but that means the bag is quite wide. When we are framing the outside wall studs @ 400 centres, I can't get through!

As a DIY'er I place a big old green wheelie bin in the room or as close as to where I am working.
I score the GIB in horizontal & vertical lines with a utility knife, open up a hand hold using a crowbar end and give the GIB a firm yank and those sheets that need a bit of coaxing I use a pry bar/nail bar/wonder bar to lever out.
When the pieces come off, they virtually fold up so I just drop them straight into the bin.
When I did my first reno job after immigrating to NZ, a friend "taught" me how to remove GIB. It was a bit like Demo Time on HGTV, I mean getting stuck in with the biggest hammer you can hold and making as much mess as you can tolerate.
Needless to say from then I have figured it is a lot safer and cleaner to put the hammers away and rely on my Stanley Wonder Bar.
Things I have found in the walls range from a 1" carpenters chisel, a coat hook, bits of news paper stuffed in holes to gib stop over, to mummified mice and birds although I am yet to find gold bar ! :-)

I use to have the same as Scott but sold it to the apprentice and now I use a tool vest made by Bjornklader in combination with there carpenter pro pants(or something like that) and man did it ever changed my life, super light weight, super comfy, really low profile so you don't get tangled into rafters and floor joists etc...

I love tool talk lol everyone has there preferences. My main tool belt is dewalt for carpentry, kunys puch for sheet metal and another kunys pouch for electrical maintenance. I work 2 jobs part time, one doing home renovations and another hvac tech/installer. I just switch out the one pouch depending on what I am doing and it works great. A Frankenstein belt lol. UK carpenter here. I use a belt (and braces) when I'm framing. No running up and down scaffolding to fetch something you've forgotten. If I'm doing finish work I use a bucket bag - it doesn't get in the way when you're kneeling down to do skirting etc. plus you just kick it around the room to where it's needed.

I've always used occidental bags and the suspenders...I live in a town with a ton of building...I always go to pawn shops and find occidental bags...the employees dont know about them ir just dont care....I can buy used leather occidental bags all day long for 30-40 bucks....I just go home and sell them same day on eBay for 200 dollars all day long. ...people in the states love used leather bags...i can sell used for more than new...makes them look better on jobsite i guess....I've got three sets of bags in my garage..lol

The tool belt numbers you quote are ASTONISHINGLY expensive- all the prices you mention in your videos are. Do we just have it that cheap in the US due to bulk sales- or is it an exchange rate thing? Here in northern CA, a good trim carpenter makes around $40/ hour, not sure what union rates are. My 20 volt dewalt impact driver cost $150, the 20 volt 5.25" [13cm] mini skill saw was about $200, my big worm drive was about $160 [in 1989]

Americans have it very good in lots of ways, land is cheap, plenty of room and low tax on consumables. In Ireland there's 23% vat on all purchase and 13% on services. When I lived and worked in Boston M.A the vat rate was 7%! Granted that was 20 years ago but I'd imagine the gap remains similar. Americans don't have a bloated "social waster" system to pay for! 🙄

Scott Brown Carpentry - Neats foot oil once a year and "Bordeaux" coloured shoe cream does the trick! Both add moisture to the leather and add water resistance. The cream also makes them look almost new. Buy both at a shoe repair shop or any horse (saddle) leather shop.

I have the same tool belt setup in black leather with suspenders (Canadian: 399.99 for the belt and 169.99 for the suspenders, both plus taxes at a crazy 14.975%). My shoulders were screaming help from the belt's weight on the suspenders when I'd keep the belt loose for a long while... bought "hip buddies" and tataaaa... no more hip aches because the buddies cushioned them and no more shoulder aches because the belt was properly tightened and the suspenders would share the weight with the belt!

Neats foot oil, "Bordeaux" coloured shoe cream and hip buddies ;)

when installing gib on walls why not use fixing glue like gib one to eliminate screwing all over the board excluding edges? saves the plasterer's time as well. just a thought. anyways nice belts. chur bro

not sure bro. different countries / states building rules most likely differ, and i guess your building products could be slightly or a lot different. NY sounds like overkill lol! though it does seem very similar to how we screw off braceline gib; eg from the GIB handbook:
- All four corners of a GIB® plasterboard bracing element must be fastened at 50mm, 100mm, 150mm, 225mm and 300mm from the edge of the sheet
- Bracing element perimeter is then fastened at150mm centres
- Fasteners must be no closer than 12mm from the paper enclosed edge and no closer than18mm from sheet ends or cut edges of sheets

apologies if i've gone overboard explaining the screw spacing lol.

in NZ we have GIBFix One which i like to use as it makes for a cleaner finish and eliminates screws popping out if applied correctly. of course when doing ceilings, i apply glue and screws everywhere all over the sheet. also take care to ensure you are not screwing into an area where you dobbed some glue. in Wellington, we get a few earthquakes too, and i have had no issues with the glue holding firm nicely. chur

You should do videos on the business aspect of your trade. Like how you get business, advertising, word of mouth, etc... how do you work with other guys, is it your job or his, do ya split it 50/50 or is he just a hired hand, etc....

I prefer going lightweight better on the body. Each to their own

@Scott Brown Carpentry there is plenty of padding so it's not a sharp edge on your thigh I dont notice it. I dont carry a flat bar.. I have occidental fat lip also it holds alot more fasteners then the diamondback.

In the mid 1970's a New Zealand carpenter would have a 2 pouch ball bag and carry a hammer, 3 ft rule, a combination square, Stanley knife, nail punch and penile, that was about it and it cost something like $80 or 90 dollars all up and we got paid $1.10 per hr but were not expected to supply any power tools.

I don't like these big bulky tool belts and have been trying to find another 2 pouch ball bag. Americans have had speed squares since the 1920's, marvellous things for roofing especially if you get the book that came with the original square, didn't see any kiwi carpenters with them until very recently.

Haha I use that too when I’m DIYing at home especially when you have to climb on a ladder. I used to have a drill holster on it too but then I switched to the Makita ones with the clip.

I smoked to much weed when I was young so I spent half my time looking for stuff I put down. Now with the screws/nails hammer, drill and tapemeasure on my belt I save 50% of my losing shit time 😁

I get backpain from the suspenders. I had the snicker belt and though built belt. Now i have milwaukee belt. Also backpain with suspenders. So no suspenders for me.

Kans Loos - I seen these models and most ppl who have them complain of exactly that. I think it has to do with the belt not being cinched properly and not sharing the weight with the suspenders... essentially, all the weight is on the shoulders! The belt on these models is not very sturdy and loses it shape quickly when the pouches are loaded up. The 3" belt on the Occidental's is very strong and won't lose its shape once tightened.

I have the same setup as Scott and also felt a lot of pain on my shoulders at days end like you... I wore my belt quite loosely and all the weight rode on the suspenders and ultimately, my shoulders... I got hip buddies and the problem was solved since they cushion the hips nicely when I tighten the belt just enough to share the belt's weight between hips and shoulders. The occidental suspenders are very well made and tough. They are the best I've ever used!
