Alone in the City of Robots
Adair Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

it's the best in midwestern technology.
this place, this town, is breaking me.
excuse me but you don't seem human.
eyes are vacant. could it be that I'm the only one?

and if home is where the heart is, then
you're all homeless. my home is on my sleeve.
excuse me but you don't seem human.
eyes are vacant. could it be that I'm the only one?

can you still feel anything?
anything at all?

can you still feel?

turn away.
look inside
and you will find
there's nothing there.
this is a box
and it is empty.

where do you keep your heart?
could it be that I'm the only one?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Adair's song Alone in the City of Robots delve into a man's struggle in a seemingly technologically advanced place. He describes the town as "breaking" him, and his question "could it be that I'm the only one?" gives an impression of a feeling of isolation and loneliness. The singer is observing the people around him and seems to feel disconnected from them. He questions their humanity, stating that they don't seem "human," and their eyes are "vacant". He is searching for a sense of belonging, and in his quest, he realizes that he wears his home on his sleeve, which is another way of saying he carries his emotions with him. The singer's stark realization of possibly being the only one who feels anything, the implication being the inhabitants of the city have become robotic and soulless, adds to the melancholy of the song.

The lyrics reveal the pervasive and invasive influence of technology and the impact it has on modern society's emotional and psychological well-being. The lyrics attempt to provoke an understanding of the danger of relying too heavily on technology and losing touch with what makes us human. The singer's dissection of the emptiness of the city of robots also highlights the human need for connection and community. The emptiness of the box the singer describes reflects the emptiness he feels inside, further emphasizing his loneliness and longing for an emotional connection.

@ReaperInTheFlowers

They have this song on iTunes! I searched it because I was looking for Adair's EP album that this was from. They have it, but it's under the artist: Wicked Pixel Cinema. It's the exact same song, but they used it in the soundtrack for Savage Harvest 2: October Blood.
