1966-67: Eva Bartova with John Christian Dee
1967-81: Eva Bartova with Hartmut Schairer
Adam & Eve were initially Erika Bartova from Prague and John Chr. Dee from Buffalo, New York, best remembered for his few, but great contributions to British R&B history as the writer of "Don’t Bring Me Down" for The Pretties and "Get Yourself Home" for The Fairies. What exactly led to overnight emigration to Frankfurt in 66 isn’t exactly clear, but he did it again in 74 after being charged in London for “procurement of women for brothels”. From 66 to 68 he played Jack of all trades for the Bellaphon label.
The Witch
Adam & Eve Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You were kissed by a witch one night in the wood,
And later insisted your feelings were true.
The witch's promise was coming,
Believing he listened while laughing you flew.
Leaves falling red, yellow, brown, all are the same,
And the love you have found lay outside in the rain.
The witch's promise was coming, and you're looking
Elsewhere for your own selfish gain.
Keep looking, keep looking for somewhere to be,
Well, you're wasting your time, they're not stupid like he is.
Meanwhile leaves are still falling, you're too blind to see.
You won't find it easy now, it's only fair.
He was willing to give to you, you didn't care.
You're waiting for more but you've already had your share.
The witch's promise is turning, so don't you wait up
For him, he's going to be late.
The lyrics to Adam & Eve's song "The Witch" tell a cautionary tale of a person who was seduced by a witch and later believes that their feelings were true. The singer in the song seems to be speaking to this person, warning them that they are a fool for believing the witch's promise. The person in question is described as having found love outside in the rain, washed clean by the water but nursing its pain. The singer warns that the witch's promise is coming and that the person is foolishly looking elsewhere for their own selfish gain.
The second verse of the song continues the theme of the person being blind to the truth. The singer advises that the person is wasting their time by looking for somewhere to be because they won't find what they're looking for. Meanwhile, the leaves are still falling, and the person is too blind to see. The final verse is a warning to the person that they won't find it easy now. The singer reminds the person that they didn't care when a good thing was offered to them, and they're waiting for more even though they've already had their fair share. The singer advises that the witch's promise is turning, so the person shouldn't wait up for the person they've been waiting for because they'll be late.

The unreleased Janie Jones version of this song is absolutely amazing. John Christian Dee or 'Adam', who wrote the song, and a few Pretty Things songs married her in the late 60's but got into heroin and everything fell apart.......I would love to have a copy of Janie's version.
