Borderline
Adam Freeland feat. Brody Dalle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

i've been heading in the wrong direction
do you feel me getting further away
i've been drowning in my own reflection
getting closer to the edge every day
i was looking for a prisoner, looking for a prisoner
coming home dead, they only hope

we're stranger than fiction

(every step you make)
(will be the last day of our lives)
(every line you take)
(just pushes me away)

here we go a-round
around every dance
thread a needle through the eye of your pain
sucking you in, dragging you down, beating you in

(every step you make) dragging you down
(will be the last day of our lives) beating you in
(every line you take) dragging you down
(just pushes me away)

you're borderline

here we go a-round
around every dance
thread a needle through the eye of your pain
sucking you in, dragging you down, beating you in

you're borderline

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song "Borderline" by Adam Freeland feat. Brody Dalle express a feeling of being lost and disconnected. The narrating character seems to have been moving in the wrong direction, feeling further away from the people and the world around them. The line "drowning in my own reflection" further emphasizes the feeling of being trapped in a negative thought cycle, getting closer to the edge of breaking down every day. The singer was looking for a prisoner, implying that they were searching for someone who could understand their situation, but even those who came back "dead" only offered a glimmer of hope. This could be a metaphor for searching for answers and finding none, or for reaching out to people who are similarly lost and finding no solace.

The chorus of the song is repeated twice and drives the point of the song home: "you're borderline." The narrating character is on the edge, hanging on by a thread. They are struggling to keep their head above water, and the last line of the chorus, "dragging you down, beating you in," gives the impression that they are fighting an uphill battle. The latter half of the song repeats the same stanza as the first half, reiterating the feelings of pain, confusion, and hopelessness. The line "thread a needle through the eye of your pain" is particularly striking, emphasizing that the character is trying to find a way to cope with their emotions and feel relief, but it is an impossible task.

Overall, "Borderline" is a song about feeling lost, disconnected, and on the edge of breaking down. It captures the feelings of many people who struggle with mental health issues, including anxiety and depression. The lyrics are powerful and emotive, particularly when combined with the haunting melody and Brody Dalle's vocals.

@alanunruh7310

its defiantly not "i was looking for a pistol Looking for a pistol again Coming up dead, only hope.

especially since between what you say is pistol again and coming up dead only hope you can clearly hear her say THEY only hope.

and sounds like prisoner then pistol but its 100% something other than coming up dead, only hope. doesnt even sound like that.

it SOUNDS more like she is saying "get blown up, they only hope"

so i hear something more like i was looking for a prisoner, looing for a pistol, get blown up..... they only hope. were stranger than fiction.

which honestly also makes little more sense too.

I've always love your rugged voice Brody <3 and the fact that you show the world who you really are :) I'll always have shivers down my spine starting at 2:41 <3 and still listening to this in 2021!

I didn't like Spinnerette at first but it has grown on me and I love it now! I think Brody is awesome as always, and I can understand an artist wanting to move in different directions. Who wants to do the same thing over and over honestly? There are always going to be people who do not like what you do..original work or newer.
