beauty
Adam Harvey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He jumped up and hollered,
“Chuck look at her over there
Man she's a queen,” I said, “You don't mean
The one with the purple hair”
He said, “She's fine,” He's lost his mind
It's been awhile since he's seen sober
I guess beauty's in the eye of the beer-holder
She's all tattooed, wearin' army boots
A mini skirt and some white tube socks
She's got nose rings and other pierced things
Looks like she fell in a tackle box
He said, “She looks just right
Neon and natural light
Make her look like a center-folder”
I guess beauty's in the eye of the beer-holder

I said, “Sit down, that last round
Sent ya clean over the edge
And every sip that's crossed your lips
Made you forget what you just said
Man don't you know just a few drinks ago
She was the one you was callin' rover”
I guess beauty's in the eye of the beer-holder

She's all tattooed, wearin' army boots
A mini skirt and some white tube socks
She's got nose rings and other pierced things
Looks like she fell in a tackle box
He said, “She looks just right
Neon and natural light

Make her look like a center-folder”
I guess beauty's in the eye of the beer-holder

Overall Meaning

The song "Beauty's In The Eye" by Adam Harvey is a witty take on how alcohol can affect one's perception of beauty. The song starts with the singer and his friend, Chuck, at a bar. Chuck points out a woman with purple hair and describes her as a queen, but the singer doubts his sincerity. The singer knows that Chuck is intoxicated and it's been a while since he's seen sober, which alludes to the fact that alcohol can alter our perception of reality. The lyrics, "I guess beauty's in the eye of the beer-holder" emphasize this point.

The song then goes on to describe the woman in question as having tattoos, army boots, a mini skirt, white tube socks, nose rings, and other piercings. This depicts a contrasting image to traditional beauty standards, which is why the singer doubts his friend's judgement once again. However, Chuck persists that the woman looks perfect and even appears like a center-folder. This line is a humorous play on words, in which Chuck means to say that the woman looks like a centerfold (someone who appears in the center of a magazine), but he says "center-folder" instead.

Ultimately, the song conveys the idea that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder and can be influenced by one's mood, environment, and, in this case, alcohol consumption. The song's lyrics and catchy melody make this message light-hearted and fun, making it a popular country song.

Thank all of you. I've literally been looking for the original song by Chuck Wagon for 20 years, ever since it used to come on CMT. It had completely vanished from the internet until Adam Harvey did this remake. Now both versions are available. It had been pissing me off ever since 2000 and now, finally this little gem of a song is back. Thank you Adam Harvey. You just became my new favorite Aussie country singer (sorry Troy Cassar-Daly).

May I take some credit for introducing Adam to this song. I used to play the Chuck Wagon and the Wheels version on 2MAX in Narrabri, which was receivable in Tamworth in the late 1990's/early 2000's. Within 12 months Adam had covered it on his own album.......

Pretty good, but I still prefer the original by "Chuck Wagon and the Wheels". The lyrics were changed for this version, it's supposed to be "she looks just right / neon and Natural Light / make her look like a centerfolder".
