Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Levine began his musical career in 1994, when he co-founded the alternative rock band Kara's Flowers, of which he was the lead vocalist and guitarist. After the commercial failure of their only album, The Fourth World (1997), the band split up. In 2001, the group was reformed – with guitarist James Valentine joining the line-up – and began a new, musical chapter, changing their name to Maroon 5. In 2002, the band released their first album, Songs About Jane, which went multi-platinum in the US. Since then, they have released four more albums, It Won't Be Soon Before Long (2007), Hands All Over (2010), Overexposed (2012) and V (2014). As part of Maroon 5, Levine has received three Grammy Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, two American Music Awards, an MTV Video Music Award and a World Music Award.
Since 2011, Levine has served as a coach on NBC's reality talent show The Voice. The winners of the first and fifth seasons, Javier Colon and Tessanne Chin, were on his team. In 2012, he made his acting debut as a recurring character in the horror television show American Horror Story: Asylum for the series' second season. He also appeared in the film Begin Again.
As an entrepreneur, Levine launched his own eponymous fragrance line in 2013. The same year, he collaborated with Kmart and ShopYourWay.com to develop his menswear collection. He also owns a record label, 222 Records. In 2013, The Hollywood Reporter reported that "sources familiar with his many business dealings" estimated Levine would earn more than $35 million that year.

Sweet rain pouring from the clouds
The world was mine, oh whoa
The cliffs, they called on me to fly
The mountains echoed with my cry
You were never welcome here, oh whoa
With your city walk
Crap technology
You took my golden paradise away
I'm coming back
Never gonna let you rise again
I'm coming home
The end is near, my friend
I'm coming back
Never gonna push me down again
Flying home on my wings of stone
On my wings of stone
I'm coming home
Thunder and lighting was my friend
Thought the glory days would never end
But you always want more, oh-whoa
The sun, it shined it's light on me
From the mountains to the sea
Through volcanoes I would soar, oh-whoa
Oh, with your power lines
And your diamond mines
Digital everything
Now my whole entire world is gone
I'm coming back
Never gonna let you rise again
I'm coming home
The end is near, my friend
I'm coming back
Never gonna push me down again
Flying home on my wings of stone
On my wings of stone (on my wings of stone)
I'm coming home
On my wings of stone (on my wings of stone)
I'm coming home
Your blood is hot, you make mistakes
My blood is cold, like the arctic lakes
My brain is small, you think it's funny, don't you?
The birds are all that's left of me
I'd rather be a bird than a monkey
I'm coming back, never gonna let you rise again
I'm coming home, the end is near, my friend
I'm coming back, never gonna push me down again
Flying home on my wings of stone
On my wings of stone (on my wings)
I'm coming home (I'm coming home)
On my wings of stone (on my wings)
(Wings of stone) I'm coming home
On my wings of stone (wings of stone, wings of stone)
(Wings of stone) I'm coming home
On my wings of stone (wings of stone, wings of stone)
I'm coming home
In "Wings of Stone", Adam Levine sings from the perspective of a baby dinosaur who once roamed freely and proudly in a golden paradise. He reminisces about how he once ruled the cliffs and mountains, flying through the skies and calling out with his mighty roar. But all that changed when humans invaded his world, with their "city walk" and "crap technology". They took away his home with power lines and diamond mines, leaving him with nothing but his memories and a deep desire for revenge. He's determined to come back and reclaim what's his, so that he can fly home on his wings of stone once again.
The lyrics of "Wings of Stone" are a powerful commentary on the destructive impact of human civilization on the natural world. The baby dinosaur represents all the innocent creatures that have been displaced and destroyed by human encroachment, and his anger and determination to fight back reflect the growing sense of urgency and desperation that many people feel about the state of the planet today. The song's message is clear: we must stop destroying our world before it's too late, or face the consequences of our own recklessness.
