Friends That Used To Be
Adept Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We had innocence, we had it all figured out.
We were the voice of a thousand
And we weren’t afraid to shout it out.
We used to roam the street
Not caring about the consequences.
But you brought poison to your life
Like the teeth from a vicious snake;
Your chemical disease.
I know that that things got hard on you.
You got in bed with the devil.
I still remember us being young
And so full of life.
So don’t close your eyes
‘Cause there is so much beauty
Left for us to see.
And you must never be afraid
To let go from the past.
You are a miracle, my friend.
From now till the bitter end.
Life is the sand running
Through the hourglass.
One grain at a time just passing through.
I know that everything takes time
But in the end
Time takes everything, just stay alive.
I hope that things will turn for you.
That you wake up from this nightmare.
‘Cause I remember us being friends
And so full of love.
So don’t close your eyes
‘Cause there is so much beauty
Left for us to see.
And you must never be afraid
To let go from the past.
You are a miracle, my friend.
(Don’t forget who your friends are).
From now till the bitter end.
The song 'Friends That Used To Be' by Adept begins with the singer reminiscing about his childhood memories with his friend. They had innocence and everything figured out at that time. They were confident, vocal and fearless of the world. However, his friend got into drugs and his addiction became his poison as it slowly spread into his veins. He is now kind of lost and seems to have given up on himself.
The singer, in the chorus, urges his friend not to lose hope and never be afraid to let go of the past. He reminds him that there is still much beauty in life and that he is a miracle who needs to stay alive. He wishes that his friend will wake up from the nightmare of addiction and find a way out of it, just like he remembers them being friends and so full of love. The song ends with the singer reminding his friend not to forget who his friends are and to always hold on to the bitter end.
This song highlights the harsh reality of addiction and how it can tear apart a beautiful friendship. It reflects on the emotional struggle of trying to help someone you once knew and loved who has lost their way. The song beautifully conveys the message that there is still hope and beauty in life, and no matter how tough things get, one must never give up on themselves.

My childhood best friend died today, victim of a traffic accident. This song makes me think about him and about his condition. He made it through for a couple of hours but couldn't survive. I was praying and hoping for him to wake up from this nightmare but he couldn't make it.
I remember listening to this song in 2014 and thinking "man, I wish to never be in the place of the person who wrote this song was. It must be awful to see a friend going away" and now I'm here. Now everytime I'll hear this song again, I'll remember him. Same thing with Rewind The Tape. "I miss the kids we used to be".
Rest, in peace, V. You are a miracle, my friend.
