Her dad used to listen to soul from the 60’s and when she started buying records herself she found the music she liked in the hip hop-section. The Notorious B.I.G and Wu-Tang Clan were a couple of favorites. At the same time she describes herself as being an “MTV-child”, listening to Nirvana and Garbage.
”A-d-i-a-m, the name of an African queen, that my mama she gave to me”
(”Mrs Dymott”)
Her parents came from Asmara, the capitol of Eritrea, but met in Italy after they had both, unaware of each other, left the home country. The couple moved to Sweden and Uppsala where Adiam was born in 1982. Eighteen years later she came to Stockholm where she took her first steps as a vocalist, thanks to a job as a receptionist at a studio. Whenever the songwriters/producers needed a singer they would ask her to enter the studio.
One thing (demo recordings) lead to another (Razzia Records) and now the time has come for Adiam to release her first album. The songs are filled with all the things that inspired her throughout the years. Soulful pop melodies meet rock’n’roll with the right to party and heavy hip-hop beats created by Thomas Rusiak. Other musicians that can be heard on the album include Christian Gabel (Thåström, Bob Hund), Mattias Bärjed (Soundtrack Of Our Lives), Harri Mänti (ex-Kent) and Fredrik Okazaki (I Are Droid). Adiam, who points out that her debut is just as much Thomas Rusiak’s, delivers the songs with an authority that is rare to find in a debutant. It does not take more than a few seconds with her voice in the speakers to realize that this charismatic 26-year-old singer is exactly where she should be.
”When I step up on the stage I’ll be rockin’ rollin”
Not only did he produce the album. Thomas Rusiak is also the guitar player in the all star band that joins Adiam on stage. Other members include Harri, Mattias and Fredrik. “I wasn’t nervous at all about our first show and I think a lot had to do with the fact that all of them are so experienced”, she says.
She feels the same kind of safety with Thomas in the studio and speaks with big enthusiasm about his ability to create big beats. To describe what the album sounds like is harder. “It’s really difficult to put it into words. But perhaps I could call it rock with big beats and soft melodies? Or a concentrated blast? No, I really don’t know. We’ve created our own little world, me and Thomas.”
Miss You

(You know I miss You)
When I ride in my car
(You know I miss you)
In a traffic jam
(You know I miss you)
All the way 'round town
(Yeah 'cause know I miss you)
(You know I miss you)
Yeah all day it hurts, because they left me
And I go out get drunk
(You know I miss you)
Come home pass out
(Yeah because know I miss you)
Chorus:
I say a prayer for you to come back
(to come back)
For you to come back (yeah!)
Like a motherless child
(You know I miss you)
Like a junkie strung out
(You know I miss you)
I hit the wall all night
(Because I miss you)
Til the lights go out
(Yeah becasue I miss you)
Like a preacher without the congregation
Like a rebel wondering where the wave went
Unlike you, I've never been patient
Times standing still
(Because I miss you)
You know I miss you x2
Because I miss you
Yeah because I miss you
Chorus
Yeah because I miss you
The lyrics to Adiam Dymott's song, Miss You, deal with the pain and longing of missing someone deeply. The repetition of "you know I miss you" in each verse emphasizes the depth of this emotion, and highlights how much this person's absence affects the singer's everyday life. The first verse describes the impact of missing someone throughout the day, with mundane activities like getting out of bed or being stuck in traffic becoming painful reminders of their absence. The second verse compares the feeling of missing someone to that of being a motherless child or a junkie, showing how all-consuming and overwhelming this emotion can be. The final lines, "times standing still, because I miss you," capture the idea that the singer's world has stopped turning since this person left their life.
The chorus of the song is a simple prayer for the person to return, highlighting the desperation and hopelessness of the situation. The final repetition of "yeah because I miss you" at the end of the song acts as a cathartic release of this pain, with the singer finally admitting to the depth of their longing. The use of repetition throughout the song reinforces the idea that the feeling of missing someone is all-encompassing, and impossible to escape.
Overall, Adiam Dymott's song Miss You is a poignant and powerful exploration of the pain of missing someone.
