Smith grew up in London and became interested in rock music at 15. He soon formed a friendship with future Iron Maiden guitarist Dave Murray, who inspired him to take up the guitar. After leaving school at 16, he formed a band called Urchin, which he led until their demise in 1980. He joined Iron Maiden in November 1980, replacing Dennis Stratton. Following a short-lived solo project called A.S.A.P., he left Iron Maiden in 1990 and, after a year-long hiatus, formed the band The Untouchables, which later became Psycho Motel. In 1997, Psycho Motel was put on hold when Smith joined the solo band of former Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson. Smith and Dickinson would both return to Iron Maiden in 1999, after which the band gained new success. During his second tenure with Iron Maiden, Smith has also led the side projects Primal Rock Rebellion and Smith/Kotzen.

Black Widow
Adrian Smith Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Isn't she lovely? And so deadly.
Her kiss is fifteen times more poisonous than the rattlesnake.
And you see her venom is highly neurotoxic
Which is to say that it attacks the central nervous system
Causing intense pain
Profuse sweating
Difficulty in breathing
Violent convulsions
And finally death.
You know what I think I love the most about her
Is her inborn need to dominate and possess.
Such power and dignity, unhampered by sentiment.
If I may put forward a slice of personal philosophy
I feel that man has ruled this world as a stumbling dimented child-king long enough!
And as his empire crumbles, my precious Black Widow shall rise as his most fitting successor!
These words he speaks are true
We're all humanary stew
If we don't pledge allegiance to
The Black Widow
The horror that he'll brings
The horror of his sting
The unholiest of kings
The Black Widow
Our minds will be destroyed
And every girl and boy
Will learn to be employed
The Black Widow
Love me
Yes we love me
Love him
Yes we love him
Love me
Yes we love him, oh
He sits upon his throne
And picks at all the bones
Of his husbands and his wives
He's devoured
He stares with a gleam
With a laugh so obscene
and the children and the virgins
He's deflowered
Love me
Yes we love me
Love him
Yes we love him
Love me
Yes we love him, oh
Our thoughts are hot and crazed
Our dreams are webbed in haze
Mindless, senseless daze
The Black Widow
These words he speaks are true
We're all humanary stew
If we don't pledge allegiance to
Ha-ha-ha, the Black Widow
The Black Widow
Sets free, oh, the children to me
The song "Black Widow" by Adrian Smith is a portrayal of a psychotic and megalomaniacal ruler who sees himself as the rightful heir to the world, and views his Black Widow as his most fitting successor. The opening lines describe the Black Widow, perhaps as his most prized possession, being highly poisonous and neurotoxic, with the ability to cause intense pain, profuse sweating, difficulty in breathing, loss of consciousness, and even death. The following lines express his admiration for her power, dignity, and inborn need to dominate and possess, unhampered by sentiment. He then puts forward his personal philosophy, that man has ruled the world for long enough, and as his empire crumbles, his Black Widow will take his place.
The first part of the chorus reinforces the idea that everyone is a part of this humanary stew and must pledge allegiance to the Black Widow. The second part of the chorus further emphasizes the terror that the Black Widow brings with her sting, and the horror she unleashes as the unholiest of kings. The subsequent lyrics describe the ruler sitting upon his throne, picking at the bones of his husbands and wives, and devouring them. He lusts after children and virgins and deflowers them with a gleeful laugh.
The final lines talk about the effect the Black Widow has on people's minds, dreams, and thoughts. They are left in a mindless, senseless haze, and the Black Widow sets the children free. The song is a dark and twisted portrayal of an individual in his deluded quest for power and control.
