Determination
Adriano Cintra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We used to kiss a lot every time we met
Until her boyfriend started treating me bad
I never saw him again
But now i heard he's found another Jap babe
To date

That's what i call determination
The kind of quality so apreciated

Later on her parents kicked her out
She went living with my jewish girlfriend
She couldn't keep her job for more than five weeks
But still she got her drugs for free

That's what i call determination
The kind of quality so apreciated,
Determination

(We used to go out and dance
We loved to get wasted and kiss
But she had a violent temper
She used to hit me

Bad, bad Jap Gurl
She was a bad, bad Jap gurl
She was a bad, bad Jap gurl
She was a mean, mean gurl)

Determination

Now i wonder what she's doing with her life
I know she's hanging around with people I don't trust
Sometimes she calls me don't have too much To say
She keeps on asking if i'm still her friend

That's what i call determination

The kind of quality so apreciated,
Determination

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Adriano Cintra's song "Determination" tell the story of a tumultuous relationship that eventually falls apart due to outside forces. At the beginning, we learn that the singer and his love interest used to kiss frequently until her boyfriend started mistreating him. The mention of the new Japanese girlfriend comes off as a slight, with the singer seemingly unhappy about the turn of events. The chorus follows each of the two verses, with the repeated phrase "That's what I call determination" both describing the actions of the characters and echoing the negative connotations of the previous verse.

The second verse tells the story of the woman's financial struggle, losing her job every few weeks but somehow managing to get drugs for free. The singer's use of the phrase "jewish girlfriend" feels out of place and random, and could have been left out altogether without affecting the story or meaning. Finally, the last verse sees the singer reflecting on his former love, wondering what she's doing with her life now. He knows she's still hanging around with less-than-reputable people and is still asking if he's her friend. The final chorus reinforces the idea that this quality of determination can be both good and bad, causing the characters to take actions that bring about both positive and negative consequences.
