In their first albums like Dark Sorcery, Beyond the Wandering Moon and ... And So The Night Became they play a "dark" kind of black metal with atmospheric elements and darker passages, partially achieved by tuning their instruments lower than is typical of black metal acts. With Shadows of Old they moved to a more typical Florida-style death metal.
They have toured in Europe with such bands as Enslaved, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth, Marduk, Mayhem, Red Harvest, Emperor and Limbonic Art. Their album Hexaeon was released in 2006.

Black Dust
Aeternus Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
child i arise
in your dreams
as a creature - of dread
as a demon - or a wicked witch
what pleases me - i choose
i am the master - of terror
child - i am tearing you - apart
my mastery - can not be escaped
black claws tears your mind
black chaos - black terror
child - i am your pain
i'll engrave pain - into your soul
i will set your soul on fire
black flames will rise - as the gate
opens - into the realm - of the dead
here - you will sleep - eternally
and in your never ending dream
i will dance - and laugh
and i will feed
again - and again
The lyrics of Aeternus's song "Black Dust" depict a world where the power of human dreams has turned into a dangerous realm, where terror and nightmares reign. The lines "human dreams - such a fruitful place to plant the seeds of terror" suggest that our deepest fears could manifest in our dreams, and they could have a significant impact on our lives. The lyrics also depict a creature or entity that creates and controls these nightmares, wreaking havoc in a child's mind, tearing them apart and engraving the pain into their soul. The lines "black claws tears your mind, black chaos - black terror" add to the sense of horror in the song, implying that the creature leaves nothing but chaos and terror in its wake.
The sinister themes of Aeternus's "Black Dust" are amplified by the use of vivid imagery and haunting vocals. The song taps into our primal fears of the unknown, the supernatural, and the monstrous. The lyrics suggest that there's little we can do to escape the terror and madness that lurks within our dreams, and that our nightmares could be a gateway into an eternal sleep, where the creature continues to dance and feed on our pain.
