Overall Meaning

African China’s “African” is a socially conscious song that highlights the harsh realities of life in many African countries. The song begins by drawing attention to the lack of food and clean water, which are basic necessities of life, and the poor condition of roads, which makes transportation difficult. The singer goes on to lament the lack of electric power and fuel which makes survival even harder for the populace. The song also touches on the issue of unemployment due to insufficient transportation, calling attention to the plight of many youths who are ready to work but cannot find means of getting to work. In the chorus, African China reminds us that Africa is full of giant brains and resources, yet it is still difficult for Africans to move around the continent freely, as getting visas for intra-African travels is still an uphill task.

The song struck a chord with many Africans as it brings attention to issues that are relevant throughout the continent. The song was released in 2005 and became an instant hit not only in Nigeria but across Africa. African China's “African” was produced by popular Nigerian music producer, Puffy T. The song was part of African China’s Mr President album which was also released in 2005. The artist adopted the name African China to reflect his appreciation for China's development strides and his hope for an Africa that is able to achieve similar progress.
